AAPC Exam Registration: From Voucher to Appointment

Registering for the CPC or another AAPC certification exam in the U.S. takes six steps in two systems: your AAPC account and Meazure Learning, AAPC's scheduling and testing partner. Paying for a voucher does not book a seat — you're registered when you hold an appointment confirmation.

How to register for an AAPC exam

  1. Check the account basics. You need a current AAPC membership, a current email and address on your account, and a government-issued photo ID whose first and last name match your account exactly. If you need testing accommodations, apply through AAPC; for an at-home exam, get them approved before you buy or schedule. (AAPC prerequisites · AAPC accommodations)
  2. Buy a voucher — only if you don't already have one. Schools, employers and training bundles can include it. Check your account first. If you're buying, pick the right exam and one or two attempts. (AAPC certification exams)
  3. Redeem the voucher. Sign in, select your name, open Purchases, find the voucher and redeem it. For exams that allow books, you'll choose print books or eBooks at this point. (AAPC: redeem and schedule)
  4. Open the Notice to Schedule email. AAPC says it arrives within an hour of redeeming and saving any required book choice. It holds a Meazure Learning login that is separate from your AAPC username and password. (AAPC certification exams · Notice to Schedule)
  5. Book the appointment in Meazure Learning. Choose at-home (live remote proctor) or a testing center, then a date and time. For the CPC, AAPC's CPC page tells candidates to register three weeks before the exam date. Book the appointment yourself — AAPC support can't pick dates on your behalf. (AAPC CPC page, "CPC exam FAQs" · AAPC can't schedule for you)
  6. Confirm and save. Check the exam name, date, time, time zone and testing setting on the confirmation, and save it. A receipt in Purchases is not an appointment.

AAPC registration next steps by current account status
What you have or see What to do next
No voucher Check whether your school, employer or course already included one. If not, choose the exam and attempt count on AAPC's exams page.
An unused voucher in Purchases Check the expiration date — standard vouchers must be used within one year of purchase; if AAPC approved an extension, use the updated date. Then redeem it and save your book format, if applicable. Don't buy a second one. (voucher validity)
Redeemed, but no Notice to Schedule Make sure any required book choice saved. Search spam and junk, and check that you're in the inbox tied to your AAPC account. Still missing after an hour? Contact AAPC support — missing scheduling emails are something they handle.
In Meazure, but your exam or a workable date isn't showing Use the login from your Notice to Schedule email. Widen the date range or try other centers. If the exam itself is missing, AAPC needs to check the voucher; a platform problem goes to the support listed in your scheduling email. (troubleshooting)
Two attempts bought, but no second appointment option Only one attempt can be booked at a time. After an unsuccessful first attempt, the second unlocks once results are released. (AAPC: two attempts)
A booked exam you need to move Change it in Meazure Learning before the cutoff — see rescheduling and cancelling. Save the new confirmation.
Name doesn't match your ID, or an accommodation isn't approved yet Fix it before exam day through AAPC's name-change process or accommodation request. If you're already booked, contact AAPC now.
Voucher expired AAPC lists $100 extensions that add 90 days from the original expiration date, subject to voucher eligibility. Ask AAPC to confirm the new expiration date and whether it covers your planned exam before paying. If it expired before you finished an AAPC course, completing all course requirements can qualify you to request a free extension once the course shows as completed. If an extension isn't available, you'll need a new voucher. (expired vouchers · extension eligibility)
You missed the appointment or couldn't start A no-show can forfeit the attempt. For a technical failure, contact Meazure Learning immediately while your exam window is still open. For a medical emergency, contact AAPC promptly for review and send dated documentation such as discharge papers; approved documentation can preserve the voucher. (missed exams)

Pick a date that won't backfire

Four rules decide whether a date works. They're on separate AAPC pages, so here they are side by side.

Four AAPC rules that decide whether an exam date works
Check AAPC's rule What it means for your date
Year-end blackout No exams from December 30 until the second Monday of January. For this changeover Tuesday, December 29, 2026 is the last day before the blackout; exams resume Monday, January 11, 2027.
Annual exam updates AAPC says exams update every January; its 2026 HCPCS Level II exam update took effect March 2, 2026. A second attempt taken the next calendar year is the new year's exam. Fail in December, retake in January, and you face the 2027 exam. Last year's books are still permitted, but AAPC strongly recommends current-year books.
Voucher window Standard vouchers are valid for one year from the purchase date. Plan any second attempt inside the same window, unless AAPC has approved an extension. Results take time, so leave room.
Membership on results day Current membership is an exam requirement. AAPC won't release results while your membership is lapsed. Most results arrive in 7–10 business days; CIC can take 10–15. If your membership renews near your test date, renew first. AAPC says you can still schedule with lapsed membership if your voucher is active, but that does not remove the membership requirement.

Sources: blackout · exam updates and book years · voucher validity · membership and results · results timing. The December 29 and January 11 dates are our calendar arithmetic from AAPC's rule, not a separate AAPC announcement. Available appointments still depend on Meazure Learning.

CPC candidates: add the three-week registration lead time from step 5. Aiming for December 29? Register by early December. For other AAPC exams, follow that exam's own instructions and the dates Meazure Learning offers.

What AAPC exam registration costs

AAPC's published U.S. voucher prices, checked October 20, 2026:

AAPC exam voucher prices by category and attempt count
Exam category One attempt Two attempts
Core exams, including CPC, CIC, CRC, COC, CPMA, CPCO, CPPM, CDEO, CDEI, CPB $425 $499
Specialty exams $325 $399
CIRCC $425 $450
Student pricing $400 $475

Sources: AAPC's general exam-price FAQ for core, specialty and student rates; CIRCC exam page, "Pricing" for CIRCC. AAPC's help-center pricing article lists some lower figures; confirm your exam's total and any student eligibility before paying.

Membership is a separate charge. AAPC lists individual membership at $229 a year. Student AAPC membership is $164, for new members enrolled in an AAPC certification course offered by AAPC or an approved education partner. Your course or employer may already cover it. (AAPC membership)

Worked examples (new individual member, core exam):

  • One attempt: $425 + $229 = $654
  • Two attempts: $499 + $229 = $728

Those totals cover only the voucher and membership — not books, a webcam, travel or taxes.

One attempt or two? At core prices the second attempt adds $74. If you later need to buy a separate single core attempt, its published price is $425. Check for an included retake before buying another voucher. If you pass first time, the unused second attempt can't be moved to another exam. Exam fees are nonrefundable and can't be transferred to another person, so check the exam name and attempt count before paying. (second attempt · refunds)

At home or at a testing center?

Both are the same electronic exam, booked through Meazure Learning. Choose the setting whose requirements you can reliably meet — this is a logistics decision, not a scoring one.

At-home versus testing-center requirements
Requirement At home (live remote proctor) Testing center
Equipment A separate external webcam on a wired connection — built-in, wireless and Bluetooth cameras aren't allowed. A tripod helps. Download the Guardian Browser before exam day. Run the equipment check AAPC links from your exam account on the computer and connection you'll actually use. Provided.
Room and desk A private, closed room with window coverings; sit at a desk or table in a chair. The camera sits to your side so the proctor sees your profile, hands, keyboard, desk and part of the screen. Desk clear of unapproved items. Follow the center's check-in instructions.
What to bring Government photo ID. Government photo ID and a printed Meazure Learning admission ticket (U.S. route).
Where available U.S., Jamaica and the Bahamas. Elsewhere, use a testing center and AAPC's country instructions.

Sources: webcam and setup · home exam space · what to bring to a center · remote exams outside the U.S.

The webcam rule can cost you an attempt. If an at-home exam can't start because the approved external webcam isn't there, the attempt can be forfeited. Buy the webcam and test your setup well before exam week. (missed exams) For the CPC, a book stand or similar adjustment for a medical reason goes through AAPC's accommodation process, not the proctor on the day. (CPC setup and accommodations)

To switch between at-home and a testing center, check that the other format is available for your exam and review the change deadlines. If the scheduling platform supports the change, cancel the existing appointment first, then book the other format. (AAPC)

ID: the name has to match exactly

In the U.S., Bahamas and Jamaica, bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Your first and last name must match your exam confirmation exactly, including multiple last names. Temporary, paper, photocopied and digital IDs aren't accepted. For other countries, follow AAPC's country-specific instructions. (AAPC: what to bring)

Name changes take AAPC 3–5 business days. AAPC asks you to report a mismatch immediately, and no later than 48 hours before the exam. That deadline does not allow the full processing time, so act as soon as you notice. After a correction, reprint a testing-center confirmation. (name changes · name mismatch)

If your exam allows books, you choose the format when you redeem. The two work differently:

  • Print: your own books, with any permitted notes you've made in them.
  • eBook: a shared library inside the exam platform, with search — but none of your personal notes or highlights.

You can switch formats under Courses & Exams up to 48 hours before the exam. Pick early and study with the format you'll use. (AAPC: book formats · shared eBooks)

Print books must be the current or previous year — no older editions, no next year's books, no photocopies, and no pages moved into a binder. Check the allowed references for your specific exam; for the CPC, the CPT book must be the AMA Professional edition. (books and materials · book years · AAPC Examinee Instructions PDF)

Leave phones (even switched off), smartwatches, tablets, bags, coats, scratch paper and outside notes out of the exam room. (personal items)

Rescheduling, cancelling and retakes

AAPC's detailed policy FAQs give these windows:

AAPC rescheduling and cancellation windows by setting
Setting When you change Result
At home 48 hours or more before No fee
At home Less than 48 hours before Changes unavailable
Testing center 10 or more days before No fee
Testing center 48 hours to 9 days before $25, paid online to Meazure Learning
Testing center Less than 48 hours before Changes unavailable

Sources: at-home policy · testing-center policy

Don't cut it close to a boundary — change earlier and check the charge shown before confirming. If you miss the appointment, AAPC's standard policy forfeits the attempt; you'll need a new voucher or your second attempt unless AAPC approves an exception after review. Cancelling an appointment doesn't make the exam fee refundable.

Using an included second attempt: after an unsuccessful first attempt, it appears once results are released — through your voucher, your results page or a Schedule Retake option, when available. Book it in Meazure Learning the same way as the first. It can't be booked before results post. (retakes)

Before you close the booking page

  • The confirmation names the exact exam I meant to book.
  • My first and last name match my government photo ID.
  • I've checked the date, time, time zone and at-home/center setting.
  • I've saved the confirmation. For a U.S. testing center, I'll print the admission ticket.
  • The date fits inside my voucher's valid period and avoids the year-end blackout.
  • My membership will remain active through results release — normally 7–10 business days after the exam, or 10–15 for CIC.
  • My book format, allowed references, equipment or travel, and any approved accommodations fit this appointment.
  • I know my change cutoff: 48 hours at home; 10 days for a free change at a testing center.

This is a manual list to read through yourself; nothing on this page is saved, submitted or checked against your AAPC account.

Quick answers

Do I need coding experience to register for the CPC?
No. Experience isn't a registration requirement. Pass without AAPC's experience requirement met, though, and you're awarded CPC-A, the apprentice designation. Removing the "A" is a separate process — our medical billing and coding certification guide explains it. (AAPC apprentice status)

Is registration different for the CPB, CRC or other AAPC exams?
Same route: membership, that exam's voucher, redeem, book. AAPC lists the CPB, CRC, CIC, CPMA, CPCO, CPPM and its specialty credentials as stand-alone certifications — you don't need the CPC first. (prerequisites)

How long is the exam?
Most AAPC exams, including the CPC, are 100 questions in 4 hours. The CPB, CIC and CPPM are also 4 hours with different question counts. (exam length)

Can I get extra time?
Apply through AAPC's accommodation request with a letter from a qualified professional. AAPC's documentation rules cap added time at one hour and say test anxiety on its own doesn't qualify. For an at-home exam, get approval before you buy or schedule. (letter requirements · remote accommodations)

Where do results show up?
In your AAPC account. AAPC doesn't give results by phone. (results)
