CMA vs CCMA vs RMA: Which Medical Assistant Certification Is Right for You?

Three organizations issue the three major medical assistant credentials: the American Association of Medical Assistants issues the CMA, the National Healthcareer Association issues the CCMA, and American Medical Technologists issues the RMA. All three are legitimate; none of them is universally 'better.' What matters is which one fits your training path and the employers in your area.

Start with your eligibility, not the acronym
The most common mistake is choosing a credential you are not eligible for. Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited medical assisting program is the standard CMA (AAMA) route, but AAMA also publishes current recertificant, medical-assisting educator, and Alternative Pathway routes. The CCMA and RMA also publish experience-based routes. Verify the exact route you can document before applying.
Then check your local job market
Search current postings in your area for 'CMA', 'CCMA', and 'RMA'. Record whether each employer says required, preferred, or accepted. When a posting uses only 'certified medical assistant', ask the employer which credentials it accepts.
