We show exactly where the conflict comes from below. Until NHA fixes it, the amount in your logged-in NHA portal is the number to use.

What are the NHA certification renewal requirements?

For CCMA, CPT, CET, CMAA, CEHRS, CBCS, and CPCT/A, standard NHA certification renewal requires 10 relevant CE credits during a two-year certification cycle. NHA defines one credit as two hours, so the practical workload is 20 hours, and extra credits do not carry into the next cycle.

The June 1, 2026 NHA Candidate Handbook says a standard certification is valid for two years following its issue date and expires on the date printed on the certificate. It also separates three exceptions from the generic rule: CPhT, provisional certifications, and the narrow California CCMA trainer category.

Two rules save people from doing unnecessary work:

1. The 10 credits cover one or more standard NHA certifications. NHA’s fee page gives the example of a holder renewing three certifications with 10 total credits—not 30.
2. Unused credits do not roll forward. Finishing 14 credits this cycle does not leave four credits waiting for the next one.

How much does NHA certification renewal cost in 2026?

NHA’s current public fee chart lists $195 for one standard credential, $260 for two, $325 for three, and $390 for four. CPhT has a separate $55 two-year renewal fee, while the public reinstatement figures for a lapsed standard credential are internally inconsistent and should be confirmed in the portal.

Standard on-time renewal fees

The $65 step is our arithmetic from NHA’s published fee chart. It is useful because it shows the real tradeoff of keeping an extra standard credential: the CE total stays at 10 credits, but the fee rises.

What the published fee does not include

The renewal fee and the cost of CE are separate. NHA says NHA One professionals and legacy members receive access to its full CE library except Specialty CE, while other certificate holders receive a select number of free NHA CE courses and may have to pay for others. NHA also says using outside CE does not reduce or change the renewal fee.

That means the honest standard-renewal budget is:

There is no reliable universal total for the CE portion because it depends on what is available in your account and whether you already have qualifying outside education.

Is it worth keeping an extra NHA credential?

This is an editorial decision, not an NHA rule. Because NHA lets the same 10 credits cover multiple standard credentials, the marginal burden of a second, third, or fourth credential is mainly the additional fee shown above—not another 20 hours of CE for each credential.

Keep the credential when it is still relevant to your work, an employer expects it, or you reasonably expect to use it before the next renewal. Letting an unused credential go can be rational, but remember that a lapse lasting more than one year moves you out of renewal and into a new exam attempt.

How many CE credits do I need—and how many hours is that?

A standard renewal requires 10 NHA CE credits, and NHA defines 2 hours of continuing education as 1 credit. That makes a normal renewal 20 hours, while a standard reinstatement requiring 15 credits works out to 30 hours.

The wording creates a trap: 10 credits is not 10 hours. If you budgeted ten hours, you budgeted half of what you need. NHA states the conversion in both the Candidate Handbook and its continuing-education guidance.

CPhT holders do the same numerical 20-hour workload as a standard on-time renewal, but the requirements are not interchangeable. CPhT CE must relate to pharmacy-technician practice and include the two mandatory subject hours; standard credentials use the broader “relevant to your professional field” rule.

A simple planning method:

• Divide the hours by the number of weeks you have left.
• Add time for any quiz, certificate download, or outside-CE upload.
• Do not plan around the grace period. Use the expiration date shown in your account as your working deadline.

How do I renew my NHA certification step by step?

For a standard active credential, complete or upload the required CE, open Renew Certifications in your NHA dashboard, review the credentials and charge, and select the renewal/payment option. CPhT follows a separate upload flow, and provisional credentials must be converted rather than renewed.

Standard NHA renewal

1. Log in to your NHA account. Use your existing profile rather than creating another one.
2. Check the exact expiration date and credential list. The two-year period runs from the issue date, and the certificate/portal shows the controlling expiration date.
3. Complete 10 CE credits. NHA CE completed inside the platform is recorded automatically.
4. Upload outside CE if needed. Use Upload External CE, enter the course title and hours, attach the official documentation, and select Add Item.
5. Open Renew Certifications. Review the credential count, CE status, and fee.
6. Pay only after the information matches your account. This matters most for stacked credentials, NHA One, and reinstatement.
7. Save proof. Keep the payment confirmation and a copy of the renewed certificate or portal status.

NHA’s current standard-renewal guide and external CE upload guide support that sequence. Portal labels can change, so use the live dashboard wording if it differs slightly.

A five-minute prepayment check

Before you submit payment, verify all five:

• Your name and contact information are current.
• The credential or credentials you intend to keep are selected.
• Your CE total has posted correctly.
• Your route says renewal or reinstatement—not something unexpected.
• The fee components and total make sense for the number of credentials.

That last check is not busywork. NHA’s public reinstatement text and chart currently disagree.

Can I use outside CE for NHA certification renewal?

Yes. NHA says it generally accepts relevant CE from outside sources, but you are responsible for obtaining and uploading official documentation, and NHA can decide whether the education is relevant. Outside CE may reduce what you spend on courses, but it does not change the renewal fee.

For standard credentials, the handbook says only official documentation will be accepted. NHA’s current upload form asks for the course title, hours spent, and supporting file.

How to upload outside CE

1. Log in to your NHA account.
2. Select Upload External CE.
3. Enter the title and hours spent.
4. Upload the supporting documentation.
5. Select Add Item after the upload finishes.
6. Check that the calculated credit total appears correctly.

For CPhT, upload documentation for all 20 hours and make sure the files show at least one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety before adding the item.

What happens if my NHA certification has expired?

A standard credential expired fewer than 30 days can use the normal renewal process without an added fee; one expired more than 30 days but less than one year uses reinstatement and 15 credits; one expired more than one year requires a new exam attempt. Exactly day 30 and exactly the one-year anniversary are not classified consistently across NHA’s current materials, so those boundary dates need portal or NHA confirmation.

NHA’s handbook also says it allows a one-month grace period, while the web page uses the more precise fewer than 30 days language. Those statements point in the same general direction but do not cleanly answer every calendar edge case.

Why the date math deserves care

“Within one year,” “less than one year,” and “more than 12 months” are not identical phrasings. Leap-day expirations add another wrinkle because NHA does not publicly explain how it treats February 29 on a non-leap-year anniversary.

The checker therefore does not invent a ruling for an exact boundary. It flags the date and sends you to the portal while you still have time to act.

Why does NHA publish two different reinstatement totals?

NHA’s current standard-reinstatement paragraph says $277.50 plus a $99 reinstatement fee, totaling $376.50. The fee-chart image on the same page instead shows $195 + $99 + $97.50 = $391.50 for one certification, creating a $15 official-source conflict.

We are not choosing a winner between two figures NHA itself publishes. The conflict may reflect a stale paragraph, a stale image, a portal rule that is not explained publicly, or a simple error. The public sources do not establish which.

What to do:

1. Open Renew Certifications in the NHA portal.
2. Record each fee component and the total shown for your account.
3. If the total is unclear or differs from both public versions, contact NHA before paying.
4. Save a screenshot or confirmation for your records.

Because the two official figures conflict, do not rely on an older page that prints one settled reinstatement total. Check the live portal amount before you submit payment.

Are CPhT renewal rules different?

Yes. CPhT renews every two years for $55 and requires 20 CE hours, including at least one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety; the portal converts those 20 hours to 10 displayed credits. NHA also gives CPhT its own reinstatement, course-content, documentation, and audit rules.

The exam is called ExCPT; the credential earned is CPhT. Do not apply the standard 10-credit/$195 route simply because both tracks ultimately show 10 credits in the portal.

Standard NHA renewal vs. CPhT renewal

The CPhT page describes “less than one year” and “more than one year,” but it does not publish the standard page’s separate fewer-than-30-days route. We cannot tell you that the standard grace rule applies to CPhT when NHA has not said so.

What can count for CPhT CE?

NHA lists live presentations, online courses, correspondence courses, workshops, in-service programs, computer-assisted instruction, journal articles with a CE test, and audio or video programs with a CE test. The content must relate to pharmacy-technician practice.

Two less-obvious routes are worth knowing:

• In-service training: up to 10 hours can be documented with NHA’s form, signed by the supervising pharmacist.
• College coursework: an eligible three-credit semester course in mathematics, life sciences, or pharmaceutical sciences with a grade of C or better earns 15 CE hours; an eligible four-credit quarter course also earns 15 hours.

NHA’s CPhT page then says the maximum earned through college courses in a two-year period is 15 “CE credits,” even though the paragraph immediately above uses hours. Because the units shift in the source, confirm the portal treatment before relying on multiple courses.

CPhT audits and recordkeeping

NHA says it randomly audits CPhT recertification submissions. The audit itself is free, an incorrectly completed audit application can require a $10 reapplication fee, and NHA recommends keeping CE certificates for at least one year after the certification expiration date.

Pharmacy technician? Use the official CPhT renewal and reinstatement instructions—not the standard renewal page.

What does NHA One change about renewal?

NHA says NHA One costs $95 each year, requires the same 10 CE credits every two years, and includes renewal at no additional charge when annual payments are current and the CE requirement is met. Two annual payments total $190, only $5 below the $195 direct one-certification renewal fee, so the meaningful value is the included CE and other benefits—not a large renewal discount.

NHA One vs. direct one-certification renewal

That comparison is ours; the inputs come from NHA’s NHA One maintenance page, NHA One enrollment page, and current renewal fee chart.

Important limits:

• NHA’s current enrollment rule says certified professionals are auto-enrolled when they certify or recertify, except provisional holders and pharmacy technicians who do not hold a second NHA certification.
• The same rule says you cannot simply join NHA One in the middle of a cycle.
• Re-enrollment is currently unavailable after early termination.
• Legacy NHA Membership stopped accepting new subscriptions on July 14, 2026; existing members continue under their plan while it remains active.
• NHA’s public help pages do not fully explain every stacked-certification and mixed CPhT scenario. Your portal is the final practical check.

If your NHA One payments are not current, NHA’s maintenance page says the standard charge is $195 plus the cost of CE. Do not assume a past payment automatically preserved the renewal benefit.

Can a provisional NHA certification be renewed?

No. A provisional NHA certification expires 12 months after the exam date, cannot be renewed or reinstated, and must be converted to full certification before it expires. The current help page gives the account-update steps, but the handbook still requires proof that full-certification eligibility was met; after conversion, the expiration date remains tied to the original testing date.

Current provisional-conversion route

1. Log in to your NHA account.
2. Open My Achievements and record the certification number.
3. Gather one approved graduation document from NHA’s current help-page list.
4. Check the handbook requirements for your credential and have any additional eligibility proof ready. The handbook calls for training or work-experience documentation and, for provisional CPT or CET conversion, the applicable live-procedure evidence.
5. Send the required material with the name on the NHA account and the certification number using the current instructions.
6. Check the account for the full certification; NHA’s help page says the update appears within two to three business days.

NHA’s current approved-document list includes:

• High-school transcript.
• Unofficial high-school transcript that includes the graduation date.
• Copy of the high-school diploma.
• GED test scores or certificate.
• School affidavit confirming graduation, subject to NHA’s deadline rule.

NHA says college transcripts are not accepted as the graduation document in this help-page workflow. Its help page also says a school affidavit is no longer accepted after the one-year deadline.

There is a source-detail worth catching: the help page focuses on one graduation document, while the Candidate Handbook describes a broader conversion file that includes proof of training or qualifying work experience. The handbook also requires evidence of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks for provisional CPT conversion, or 10 EKGs for provisional CET conversion. Follow the requirement that applies to your credential rather than assuming one graduation file completes every conversion.

A provisional credential that expires before conversion moves to a new exam attempt. There is no 15-credit reinstatement shortcut.

Do not use the standard renewal checkout for a provisional credential. Follow NHA’s current provisional-conversion instructions.

Do state rules change NHA certification renewal?

State rules do not rewrite the NHA credential, but they can create a second maintenance obligation and can affect which CE a regulator accepts. Most people are tracking one clock. Many have two: treat NHA certification and any state license, registration, permit, or employer requirement as separate clocks, then satisfy both when both apply.

The two-clock framework

The NHA Candidate Handbook is explicit that NHA certification requirements are separate from state permission-to-practice rules and that laws vary by state. NHA’s CE guidance also tells certificate holders to check whether their state has specific CE requirements that affect which courses are accepted.

The California CCMA trainer exception is narrow

NHA’s handbook states a special rule for a person who:

1. Holds the CCMA certification.
2. Works in California.
3. Trains other medical assistants.

When all three are true, NHA requires at least 60 continuing-education hours every five years. This is not a blanket rule for every CCMA holder in California, and it does not replace any separate California legal or licensing requirement.

The public NHA pages do not fully explain how this special five-year track interacts with the generic fee and lapse charts. The route checker therefore sends this group to direct confirmation rather than forcing the standard 10-credit answer onto them.

Do I have to retake the NHA exam after one year?

For a standard or CPhT credential expired more than one year, NHA says reinstatement is no longer available and you must re-register, retake the exam, and pay the current full exam price. Renewal CE by itself cannot reactivate the credential after that point, while a lapsed provisional certification also requires a new attempt because it has no reinstatement route.

Those are not reasons to delay an ordinary on-time renewal. They are reasons to use the portal and get direct confirmation when your facts land in one of the gaps.
