NHA Exam Registration: How to Apply, Pay, and Schedule Without Losing Your Fee

NHA exam registration starts in the official NHA Certification Portal — not directly with PSI or another testing provider, and not through your instructor. You create your own candidate profile or log into the one you already have, choose the organization type that matches your real school or employer status, apply for the exact exam, agree to the attestation, pay if you are not sponsored, and then schedule your seat. If you've tested with NHA before, log in. Do not create a second profile.

That's the whole process. The application itself is short if nothing goes wrong.

Here's the part nobody puts on the page: up to six separate clocks can attach to an NHA registration. The two-hour clock can void an unfinished application. The 24-hour and six-month clocks can put the exam fee at risk. The 8-day, 30-day accommodation, and 30-day retake clocks decide whether your planned date survives. NHA's current public sources also publish two overlapping six-month boundaries, conflict on when a direct purchase can be refunded, and conflict on whether a closed institution roster can ever be reopened. We show the mismatch instead of choosing the convenient version.

How does NHA exam registration work?

NHA exam registration has two stages: create or log into your own candidate profile, then apply for a specific certification exam. Applying is not the same as scheduling. For many candidates those are two separate acts, and payment sits between them. Your organization type — the field you choose when you create or update the account — affects the registration options you receive.

That last part is the whole ballgame, so let's slow down on it.

When you set up your NHA account, you're asked to pick an Organization Type. If you're connected to a school, employer, or training program that is an authorized NHA test site, you select that institution. If you're not, you select Registering individually. The current Candidate Handbook says the selection affects your registration options. It also says an affiliated candidate may still be routed to a third-party provider when the institution does not administer that specific exam.

The organization field does not do everything candidates assume it does. Payment can depend on institution pay, inventory, candidate pay, or another arrangement. An Access Key does not control billing, inventory, discounts, or payment; NHA's current Access Key instructions describe it as an optional institution-created password that confirms the candidate is applying for the correct exam or date. If the portal requires one and you do not have it, the institution — not NHA Support — has to provide it.

One rule worth slowing down for: you have to do this yourself. The handbook says the candidate must create the profile and complete the exam application — not a parent, teacher, school official, sponsor, case worker, or other third party. You are bound by the attestation made under your name. NHA reserves the right to audit those statements and discipline false attestations.

Route A — through your school or employer

1. Log in and check your home page. Confirm your organization is listed correctly before you touch anything else.
2. Choose Apply for Exam under Applications.
3. Select your certification and re-confirm the organization.
4. If your exam is greyed out, stop. NHA's instruction is to contact your institution administrator or educator. Nothing on your end unlocks it.
5. Read the attestation and agree only if it is true for you.
6. If you're testing on site, choose your date from the list your school opened.
7. Answer the prerequisite questions.
8. Enter the Access Key if the portal requires one and your institution gave it to you. The key confirms that you are entering the correct institution exam or date. It does not decide who pays.
9. Enter billing and shipping details if required, then choose Finalize Application.
10. On Review & Checkout, verify the exam, payment method, and total before you choose Place Order.
11. Save the receipt.
12. If the institution is sending you to PSI instead of testing you on site, return to your NHA account and use the scheduling prompt after the application is approved.

The current institution instructions say registration deadlines cannot be overridden and a closed roster cannot be reopened. A separate February 2026 NHA educator FAQ says an institution may contact Client Care to reopen a date while it still shows closed. Those instructions conflict. Treat the date as closed, ask your institution immediately, and do not build your plan around reopening.

Route B — on your own

1. Create your account. Type your first and last name exactly as they appear on the ID you will use for admission.
2. Set Organization Type to Registering individually. If a school is showing and should not be, correct it before you apply.
3. Choose Apply under Applications and pick your certification.
4. Read and agree to the attestation only if it is true for you.
5. Answer the prerequisite question, then continue to checkout.
6. Pay. Unless a sponsor is paying for you, the handbook gives you two hours from applying to complete payment before the application is voided.
7. Back in your account, look for the You have an unscheduled application with PSI banner or the scheduling prompt assigned to you.
8. Choose the testing mode your account offers.
9. For remote testing, run the system check and confirm your ID, device, connection, room, and time zone before you book.
10. Book the slot and save the confirmation.

When does payment happen?

The Candidate Handbook is direct: unless an institution or employer sponsors you, payment is required when you apply, and the payment process must be finished within two hours. If the window closes, the application is voided and you reapply.

Practical answer: don't open the application until you know your route, have the required institution information, and can finish checkout. The two-hour rule is not a reason to panic. It is a reason not to start halfway through a school day with no payment method and no one available to answer an institution question.

Should you register through your school or as an individual?

Pick the actual school, employer, or training program when you're connected to an authorized NHA institution; pick “Registering individually” when you aren't. The choice affects the application route and testing options. Payment is controlled separately by the payment method or inventory arrangement shown in the application — not by the Access Key.

Not sure whether your school is set up with NHA? Ask your program administrator three questions: does the program use NHA's platform, does it have a scheduled section for your exact exam, and which payment method applies to you? Don't guess, and don't open a second account to test the theory.

What does NHA exam registration cost?

NHA's public store showed $134 on the standard exam-application listings we checked and $129 for the ExCPT exam application when checked August 11, 2026. The Candidate Handbook does not print a dollar figure; it directs candidates to NHA's website. The amount that governs your purchase is the total shown on your own Review & Checkout screen.

Why the checkout number can differ:

An Access Key is not a coupon and does not apply institution money. NHA's current instructions say Access Keys do not affect billing, inventory, discounts, or payment. Institution pay, inventory pay, candidate pay, and discount arrangements are separate controls.

What to do instead of trusting a copied price: read the exam name, payment method, and total on the Review & Checkout screen before choosing Place Order. If your school said it was paying and the portal is charging your card, stop before placing the order and ask the institution which payment arrangement should appear.

One more thing worth hearing before you pay. NHA's own handbook says buying NHA prep materials isn't required to sit for an exam and does not guarantee a passing score. That's NHA describing NHA's products, and it's just as true of ours.

How far in advance do you have to register for an NHA exam?

There are two different lead times, and which one applies depends on your route. For a school-hosted exam date, NHA requires the application deadline to be at least 8 days before the exam, and says it stopped accommodating registration requests inside that window on January 1, 2026. For a third-party appointment, NHA's February 2026 testing-season FAQ says scheduling may occur as close as 24 hours before the intended exam, subject to location, proctor, and appointment availability.

So, plainly:

• Testing at your school? Your real deadline is the institution's application close date, which must be at least 8 days before the exam and can be earlier. Candidate-facing instructions say the closed roster cannot be reopened. The educator FAQ describes a Client Care reopening path while a date still shows closed. Ask immediately, but assume you need a new eligible date.
• Testing through PSI or remote proctoring? The 8-day institution rule does not control the appointment inventory shown to you. NHA says scheduling may occur as close as 24 hours out, but availability controls what you can actually book.
• Need accommodations? Complete the NHA exam registration first, submit the request, and allow 30 days. If you're a third-party candidate, do not schedule the PSI appointment until the accommodation is approved and NHA sends the special scheduling instructions.

There is no universal “register exactly X weeks early” rule in the official sources. What exists is an 8-day institution application floor, a possible 24-hour third-party scheduling floor, a 30-day accommodation recommendation, a six-month application-use window, and a separate rescheduling boundary tied to the original scheduled exam date.

What are the six NHA exam registration deadlines?

Six clocks can attach to the process. Two directly put the exam fee at risk; one voids an unfinished application; the other three decide whether your planned date or route survives. Write down the dates that apply to you before you start.

The two six-month clocks

Here's the finding we'd most like you to check for yourself, because it's worth real money and it took reading two NHA documents side by side to see.

Two rules. Two start dates. Four months apart in that example.

Castleport's editorial action: satisfy both rules. Finish the exam within six months of applying, and if you reschedule, keep the new date within six months of the original scheduled exam date. Put both dates in your calendar and use whichever arrives first. If you're near either edge, contact NHA before buying another application.

Where do NHA's current sources diverge or conflict?

Three current source mismatches change what a candidate should do. One is a pair of overlapping six-month rules; two are direct conflicts. Each one can change a date or a refund decision.

The safe move is not to pick the sentence you like better. It is to use the earliest deadline, preserve your receipts and confirmations, and get a decision from NHA before a fee or date expires.

Where do you actually take the NHA exam?

Three routes exist: at an authorized institution if it administers your exact exam, at a PSI test center, or through live remote proctoring when that option is assigned and available. ExCPT is the exception: NHA says schools cannot administer that exam on site, so ExCPT candidates use third-party testing.

The current NHA product-change log matters here. Starting June 1, 2026, PSI-delivered exams stopped allowing scratch paper and moved to embedded digital tools, a physical whiteboard at test centers, and a digital whiteboard remotely. Older pages that still tell PSI candidates to expect scratch paper are describing the pre-June 2026 process.

A few remote rules are blunt because they need to be: the room has to be clear, quiet, private, and free from distractions; nobody else can enter; you cannot leave for a break; and the ID restrictions are tighter. If your internet, room, device, or only available ID is questionable, resolve it before booking remote.

You paid, and there's still no test date. What happened?

The application and appointment are separate actions. Completing the first does not always complete the second. Log into your NHA account and look for the You have an unscheduled application with PSI banner or the scheduling control attached to your application.

To fix it: open your account, locate the application, and use the scheduling prompt. NHA's current PSI instructions direct candidates to the banner and then to the approved exam, testing mode, date, and time. If the control isn't there, contact NHA or your institution instead of starting a second application.

Save these three things: the NHA application confirmation, the payment or sponsor confirmation, and the provider booking confirmation with the exact time zone.

Why isn't the online testing option showing up?

Possible reasons — not a diagnosis of your account:

• The application is not complete.
• The institution has not approved the application yet.
• Your route is an institution-administered exam rather than a third-party booking.
• Remote appointments are not available for the exam, date, location, or provider assignment you're viewing.
• An approved accommodation requires a PSI test center rather than remote testing.
• You're looking somewhere other than the scheduling control inside the NHA account.

A preferred testing mode is not a guaranteed testing mode. If the option should be there and isn't, use NHA Support or your institution rather than opening a second account or application.

Do you qualify before you register?

Most NHA exams require a high school diploma or recognized equivalent plus a qualifying training, apprenticeship, military, employer-training, pre-externship, instructor, or supervised work pathway. ExCPT has separate pharmacy-specific rules. The registration page makes you attest to eligibility; it does not turn a guess into eligibility.

Three more that catch specific groups:

The five-year training clock runs to the application or registration date in the current handbook language. Once the training completion is five years or more behind that date, the training route closes and the candidate needs the relevant work-experience route.

Still in high school? Provisional certification may let you test up to 12 months before graduation if the other requirements are met. It expires 12 months after the exam date, cannot be renewed, and is not available for ExCPT.

Finished coursework but not the externship or employer on-the-job training? An institution or employer with the required NHA agreement may let you test under the pre-externship or employer-training route. The credential is held until completion is reported. The handbook gives 90 days from the exam date for the externship route and 180 days for the employer-training route before a passed score can be voided.

Is your NHA exam version changing before your test date?

Registration is not the place to learn an entire blueprint, but it is the place to confirm which version your date will use before you buy study material. Three current version facts matter:

NHA publishes both CPCT/A test plans and a crosswalk. This page does not duplicate those blueprints. It tells you where the date boundary is so you do not register for one version and study from another.

What ID do they check at the door?

Bring a current government-issued photo ID, and make the name in your NHA application match the ID you will present. The Candidate Handbook says the ID should include a current photograph, signature, and permanent address. If the address differs from the one supplied at registration, the handbook says to bring proof of address, such as a current utility bill that matches the government-issued ID.

The name mismatch is the preventable version. People register with a nickname, shortened first name, prior surname, or different spacing. Fix the account before exam day, not at the door.

Remote has a tighter published checklist. NHA says military IDs and credit cards are not accepted for live remote proctoring, and the ID cannot be temporary or paper. The current source we found does not give the same explicit military-ID answer for PSI test centers. If a military ID is your only government photo ID, confirm the accepted in-person form before you book.

Can you reschedule, cancel, or get a refund?

You can move a PSI or remote appointment without repaying the exam fee when you act more than 24 hours before the slot, keep the new date within six months of the original scheduled exam date, and still use the application within its six-month life. Inside 24 hours, the handbook says the exam cost is forfeited and you re-register and repurchase. Institution rescheduling is at the institution's discretion and must happen before the exam starts.

By route:

• PSI center or remote: log into the NHA account, open the application, use Schedule with PSI, then use PSI's test-management path to cancel or re-book. Act more than 24 hours ahead.
• At your school or employer: contact the site before the exam begins. Approval is the site's decision, and the replacement date needs a workable registration route.
• Weather or provider closure: the handbook says PSI reschedules at no extra charge and attempts to contact affected candidates.

The refund rule is not clean

The June 1, 2026 Candidate Handbook says a refund is available when NHA, PSI, or another provider cancels and the candidate does not reschedule, and says there are no other refund circumstances. NHA's current public refund page says it replaces previously published return, refund, and cancellation policies. That page allows an eligible, unused direct purchase to be requested for refund within 28 days, and says no refund is available after the final exam has been attempted.

Candidate action: contact NHA within 28 days of purchase and before attempting the exam if you are seeking a refund. Keep the receipt and ask NHA to apply the current published refund policy to your exact order. Do not assume every exam purchase or package is eligible, and do not wait for day 29.

How do NHA testing accommodations work?

Register for the exam first, submit the accommodation request second, and — if you're testing through PSI — wait to schedule until NHA approves the request and sends the special instructions. NHA recommends submitting at least 30 days before the planned exam date.

That sequence matters. The original registration route stays the same, but the appointment sequence changes:

1. Complete your own NHA exam registration.
2. Submit NHA's accommodation form and supporting documentation.
3. Allow at least 30 days before the planned date.
4. If you're using third-party testing, do not book the appointment yet.
5. Wait for the NHA Compliance decision and scheduling instructions.
6. Book the approved mode and confirm that the accommodation appears.

NHA says approved accommodations generally remain valid for one year unless tied to a temporary condition. If the testing venue changes, Compliance must be told or the accommodation may not follow to the new venue.

Remote is not available for every approved accommodation. NHA says PSI can support approved accommodations, but anything beyond extended time requires an on-site PSI testing center rather than live remote proctoring.

How do you register for an NHA retake?

Log in as a returning candidate, wait the required period, apply again, and pay the full current exam price. Do not create a second profile.

The handbook's retake rule is:

• At least 30 days between the first three attempts.
• After the third unsuccessful attempt, wait 1 year before attempting again.
• Every attempt requires a new registration and the full current exam fee.

Mechanically it's the same flow you already know: apply, pay, schedule. The registration owner page stops there. Scoring, score reports, question counts, and blueprint study strategy belong on the exam hub rather than being duplicated here.

Do I register with NHA or with PSI?

Register with NHA first. You create or use your candidate profile, apply, attest, and pay in the NHA Certification Portal. After the application is complete and approved where required, the scheduling control routes you to PSI or the provider assigned to you.

Can I take the CCMA exam without enrolling in a school?

Yes, when you meet an NHA eligibility pathway that does not require current school enrollment. NHA publishes a supervised work-experience pathway of one year in the last three years or two years in the last five, plus other qualifying routes. Self-study alone does not create eligibility. Set the organization type that truthfully matches your status and let the portal route you.

How long does NHA exam registration take?

NHA does not publish a standard application-completion time. The fixed candidate clock is the two-hour payment window: unless sponsored, payment must be completed within two hours of applying or the unfinished application is voided. Scheduling may follow immediately or after institution approval.

Can my instructor, parent, or employer register for me?

No. The Candidate Handbook says the candidate must create the profile and complete the exam application. A school or employer can host, sponsor, approve, or provide an Access Key; it cannot make the attestation for you.

Do I have to upload my diploma or program certificate to register?

The current handbook describes an attestation-and-audit system rather than a universal document upload during registration. Keep your diploma, completion record, employer verification, procedure evidence, or other pathway proof because NHA can audit the attestation and request documentation.

What is an NHA Access Key?

An Access Key is an optional institution-created password that confirms you are applying for the correct exam, exam date, or third-party certification type. NHA says it does not affect billing, inventory, discounts, or payment. If the portal requires a key, get it from the institution; NHA Support cannot provide it.

What happens if I miss the two-hour payment window?

The unfinished application is voided and you reapply. Before paying again, check your order history, email, and card activity to make sure the first attempt did not complete.

How much is an NHA exam?

NHA's public store showed $134 on the standard exam-application listings we checked and $129 for ExCPT when checked August 11, 2026. The number on your own Review & Checkout screen controls; institution-pay, inventory-pay, candidate-pay, and discount-code arrangements can change what the candidate is charged.

Can I get an NHA exam refund?

NHA's current public sources conflict. The current refund page says it replaces earlier policies and allows eligible, unused direct purchases to be requested within 28 days; the June 2026 handbook limits exam refunds to a provider-canceled exam that is not rescheduled. Contact NHA within 28 days and before attempting the exam, keep the receipt, and ask how the current policy applies to your order.

Can I take an NHA exam at home?

Yes, when live remote proctoring is offered for your application and your equipment, room, ID, and accommodations fit the rules. Remote means no breaks, nobody else in the room, a system check, a current non-temporary accepted photo ID, and a digital whiteboard rather than paper.

Can I switch from remote to a test center?

Use the rescheduling path in your NHA account, act more than 24 hours before the appointment, keep the new date within six months of the original scheduled exam date, and still finish within six months of the application. If you have accommodations, notify NHA Compliance before changing venues so the approval follows the exam.

What if I fail three times?

After the third unsuccessful attempt, the handbook requires a one-year wait before the next attempt. The first three attempts require at least 30 days between them. Every retake is a new registration at the full current fee.

Can I register while still in high school?

Provisional certification may allow you to test up to 12 months before graduation when the other requirements are met. It expires 12 months after the exam date, cannot be renewed, and is not available for ExCPT.

What if my legal name doesn't match my NHA account?

Correct the account before exam day. Bring the current government-issued photo ID you plan to use for admission, and make the application name match it.

Does passing an NHA exam let me work in my state?

Not automatically. The handbook says NHA certification requirements are separate from state law and that certification does not guarantee you meet a state's practice requirements. Check the current oversight body for your profession and state.

Which provider do I use if search results mention both PSI and Prometric?

Do not choose from a search result. Complete the NHA application and use the provider and scheduling link shown inside your own account. The current Candidate Handbook and Help Center commonly route candidates to PSI while also allowing NHA to engage more than one remote-proctoring provider.

What should you do next?

Open your NHA account and check one field: Organization Type. Then confirm the exact exam, institution, payment method, and checkout total before you choose Place Order. Put the two-hour, 24-hour, six-month, and any 8-day or accommodation dates into your calendar. Save the application confirmation, receipt, and appointment confirmation.
