ASCP Exam Registration: How to Apply and Book Your Exam

ASCP exam registration happens in two stages: you apply to the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC), and once ASCP makes you eligible and your Admission Notification is available, you book your test with Pearson VUE. This guide covers U.S. ASCP certification exams such as MLS, MLT, PBT, HT, and MLA; international (ASCPi), qualification, and state-license-only exams are covered near the end.

Register in 9 steps

  1. Pick your credential and eligibility route. Use ASCP's Eligibility Assistant, then read the routes on your credential's page. If you're deciding between ASCP and ASCPi, compare the actual education and training requirements, not just where you live (ASCP vs. ASCPi). You can't change your category or route after you submit, and ASCP doesn't review eligibility before you apply.

  2. Check your timing. If you're finishing an accredited program, apply no earlier than six weeks before you complete all program requirements. Enter your program end date, which may be different from your graduation date. (ASCP)

Need testing accommodations? ASCP must approve them before you submit your application. See how to request them.

  3. Use one ASCP account. Sign in to the account you already have, or create one if you don't. Your first and last name must match the government ID you'll bring to the test center. (ASCP)

  4. Gather your documents before you start. Each training or experience form must be its own PDF (10 MB or smaller), in English, with original handwritten signatures and your name as it appears on the application, plus a Letter of Authenticity. Forms sent by mail or email won't be reviewed; they're uploaded in the application. (ASCP documentation rules)

  5. Click Apply Now, upload, and arrange payment. Start from your credential's page, verify your email and contact details, select your category and route, upload your required forms, and follow the payment instructions. Your first application under a route can't be completed without its required documentation. The application isn't complete until payment is processed, and the fee is non-refundable. (ASCP application instructions)

  6. Have the academic records required by your route sent directly to ASCP after you submit, following ASCP's transcript delivery instructions. An official transcript must verify the required high-school completion, coursework, or conferred degree, as applicable; HT(ASCP) Route 1 applicants do not need to send a transcript. Select ASCP Board of Certification as the recipient through your school's transcript service. If the school handles electronic delivery itself, its official representative can use transcripts.boc@ascp.org for ASCP applications. You can't send your own copy.

  7. Watch your status. ASCP says to expect a status update within 2–3 weeks of submitting. Log in → BOC Activities → Completed BOC Exam Applications → Show Details. Check spam: ASCP won't grant extensions or refunds for missed emails.

  8. When you're Eligible, open your Admission Notification and book with Pearson VUE. Check that your name matches your ID and note your testing dates. Book early; you must test within the eligibility period printed on that notice.

  9. Keep Pearson's confirmation email with your date, time, and test-center address, and check the ID and arrival rules before test day.

Registration deadlines and timing

Missing your testing window or appointment can mean a new application and full fee. The other deadlines below can delay or end an application.

Clock Rule What happens if you miss it
Earliest apply date (accredited program) No earlier than 6 weeks before you complete all program requirements ASCP tells students not to apply sooner
An unfinished application Gather documents first, complete the application and arrange payment promptly, and follow the deadline shown in your application A saved draft or unprocessed payment is not a completed application
Missing documents (Deficient status) Within 8 weeks of your first submission date, unless your deficiency notice gives a different date Your application may be deleted
Taking the exam Inside the eligibility period on your Admission Notification Reapply with a full fee; ASCP doesn't extend eligibility periods
Rescheduling Contact Pearson at least one full business day (24 hours) before your appointment Cancelling without rescheduling or missing the appointment means reapplying with a full fee
Required transcript, if you test before it's processed Must be fully processed within 1 year of your exam date Your score is invalidated

Use the dates on your Admission Notification. Do not assume a three-month window: your notice gives the period within which you must take the examination.

Worked example: a NAACLS MLS student

Hypothetical example using the rules checked October 30, 2026. Recheck the rules and fee before applying.

Maya finishes her NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program on Friday, May 14, 2027. She's applying for MLS(ASCP) under Route 1 (a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university plus a NAACLS MLS program completed within the last five years).

Date What she does Rule behind it
Fri, Apr 2, 2027 Earliest day to apply (6 weeks = 42 days before May 14). She enters May 14 as her program end date, submits, and pays the fee shown when she applies Six-week rule; current fee on the MLS page
Right after submitting Asks her registrar to send her official transcript to ASCP once her degree posts Transcripts come straight from the school
About Apr 16–23, 2027 Expects her first status update (2–3 weeks after submitting) ASCP's processing estimate, not a guarantee
Fri, May 28, 2027 Eight-week point for any unresolved deficiency, unless her notice gives another date Deficiency rule
After program-director verification is processed She reads her Admission Notification and checks its permitted testing dates. All program and academic requirements must be complete before she tests Electronic program verification and the Admission Notification
Tue, Jun 8, 2027 Assuming she has confirmed an available June 8 appointment within her authorized period, this is exam day at a Pearson test center. If she needs to move it, her last change day is Mon, Jun 7, at least 24 hours before her appointment time Pearson cutoff chart
Thu, Jul 8, 2027 If she doesn't pass: the earliest a new eligibility period can begin (30 days after Jun 8), after she views her score report and submits a new application and fee Retake rule

The six-week, eight-week, and 30-day intervals above use calendar dates. Rescheduling uses Pearson's separate full-business-day rule. Your own testing window comes from your Admission Notification, not from this example.

What your application status means

Status What it means What to do now
Received Your application and fee are in ASCP's queue. Applications are processed in the order received Make sure any required academic records were sent. Keep checking your account and spam folder
Deficient Your documents didn't verify that you meet every requirement Log in, read exactly what's missing, and send it fast. The clock runs from your first submission date
Eligible You're approved, and your Admission Notification is ready Check your name and dates, then book with Pearson right away
Ineligible Deficiencies weren't resolved in time You'll need a new application and fee. If you think the decision is wrong, ASCP has an appeals process

If 2–3 weeks have passed with no update, check your account and any required academic-record delivery confirmation, then contact ASCP BOC through its contact page. Don't pay for a second application just to speed things up.

Your document checklist

Gather everything before you start the application. Your credential's page names the exact forms for your route.

Every applicant

Accredited-program route (NAACLS, CAAHEP, or ABHES)

Experience route

Military route (CT, HT, HTL, MLA, MLS, MLT)

Foreign education

For Canadian education, follow ASCP's Canadian education or training instructions; ASCP may require an evaluation. Foreign transcript evaluation requirements explain what an evaluation must contain.

This is a preparation checklist. ASCP BOC decides eligibility after it reviews your paid application.

Sources: documentation rules, official transcripts, PBT and MLA applicants, program-director application instructions, and experience verification.

Can I test while my transcript is still being processed?

Applicants using an applicable accredited-program route can test once before ASCP receives and processes the required official transcript, provided all program and degree/coursework requirements are complete before testing. You can't view your official results until it's processed. The transcript must be fully processed within one year of the exam date, or the score is invalidated. (ASCP accredited-program rules)

ASCP exam application fees

Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, including if you're found ineligible. Each retake needs a new application and fee.

The selected certification fees below are for ASCP applications; qualifications are labeled separately. All amounts are in U.S. dollars.

Credential Application fee
PBT (Phlebotomy Technician), MLA (Medical Laboratory Assistant) $155
MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician), HT (Histotechnician) $235
MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) $260
HTL (Scientist in Histotechnology), CT, BB, C, H, M, MB, CG $260
Qualifications: QIHC, QLS, QIA, QBRS $260
SCT (Specialist in Cytology) $310
DLM (Diplomate in Laboratory Management) $425
PA (Pathologists' Assistant) $550
SBB, SH, SM, SC, SMB, SCYM Check the credential's page before applying

These are application fees only. They don't include your program, transcript or evaluation-agency charges, or any state license. ASCPi applicants should check their own credential page; ASCP lists reduced pricing for some applicants educated and residing in low-to-middle income countries.

Fees verified October 30, 2026, on the official category pages linked in the table, under "Application Fee (non-refundable)." Every displayed dollar amount was checked; the table is not an exhaustive fee schedule.

Booking, moving, and keeping your Pearson appointment

  • All certification exam scheduling goes through Pearson VUE, not ASCP. Use the instructions in your Admission Notification or Pearson's ASCP page.
  • You can book as late as one business day ahead, but dates fill up. Book as soon as you're Eligible.
  • To reschedule, contact Pearson at least one full business day (24 hours) before your appointment. A voicemail doesn't count. Pearson emails a confirmation within 24 hours; if you don't get one, you haven't rescheduled. You can only move your exam within your eligibility period.
Test day Last day to contact Pearson
Monday Friday of the week before
Tuesday Monday
Wednesday Tuesday
Thursday Wednesday
Friday Thursday
Saturday Friday
Sunday Friday

Around holidays, contact Pearson earlier. Cancelling without rescheduling, missing your appointment, or letting your eligibility period run out all mean a new application and a full fee.

Testing accommodations: get approval before you apply

ASCP must review and approve accommodations before you submit your application. Email your written request to testaccommodations@ascp.org with a signed, dated letter of diagnosis on professional letterhead from your physician or another qualifying professional explaining the need for the requested accommodations, plus documentation of your condition and how it affects testing. Signatures must be handwritten, not electronic, and everything goes in as a PDF. Proof of accommodations on other high-stakes exams can help. (ASCP testing accommodations)

Exam day: ID and check-in

  • Bring one unexpired ID with your photo and signature: a driver's license, national/state/province ID card, passport, or permanent resident card.
  • The first and last names on your Admission Notification must match that ID. If they don't, ask ASCP for a name change before you schedule.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early. If you're late, you may not be allowed to test, and a missed appointment or unacceptable ID means a new application and fee.

Most ASCP certification exams are computer-adaptive: 100 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. PBT is 80 questions in 2 hours. (ASCP test center; about the exam)

Results and retakes

  • You'll see a preliminary pass/fail on screen at the test center. ASCP emails you within four business days that your official results are ready, as long as any required official transcript has been received and processed.
  • If you don't pass, view your official score report, then submit a new application and fee. Your new eligibility period can start no earlier than 30 days after your previous exam date. That's the earliest start, not a guaranteed seat.
  • You usually don't need to resubmit documentation unless ASCP asks. ASCP must verify you've met academic requirements before you can schedule again.
  • You may take the examination five times under one eligibility route if you continue to meet its current eligibility requirements. After five unsuccessful attempts, you'd need to qualify under a different route.

Other paths: ASCPi, qualifications, and state-license-only exams

  • ASCPi is ASCP's international certification pathway, with its own eligibility routes in the same application system. ASCP has a quiz and a comparison page to help you choose. For direct electronic delivery by an institution or evaluation agency, ASCPi applications use a different email address; follow ASCP's transcript delivery instructions.
  • Qualification exams (QIHC, QLS, QIA, QBRS) aren't booked with Pearson. You take them online on your own computer within your eligibility period, using the authorization number in your Admission Notification. (ASCP)
  • California and New York offer state-licensure-only exams through ASCP BOC. Passing one doesn't give you an ASCP credential. If you qualify for ASCP certification, apply for that instead. (ASCP state licensure)
  • An ASCP credential isn't a state license. Some states require their own license to work in a lab. If you're an MLS, see MLS licensure requirements by state, then follow your state regulator's instructions.
