BCaBA Exam Requirements for 2026 and 2027

To take the BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) exam as a first-time U.S. applicant, you need a bachelor's degree or higher, behavior-analytic coursework (or an ABAI-accredited degree that covers it), supervised fieldwork under a qualified BCBA, and an approved application from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). The numbers depend on one date: if the BACB receives your complete application — payment and every required document — by December 31, 2026, it's reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, and anything received from January 1, 2027 on is reviewed under the 2027 requirements.

The two fieldwork types are alternatives, not totals you add together, and each has monthly rules too. A Pathway 1 degree covers the coursework row.

Which rules apply to you?

The date the BACB receives your complete package decides it. Your start date, fieldwork finish date and exam date do not select the eligibility framework; your coursework and fieldwork still have their own timing rules. The exam itself is the same under both sets of rules: the BACB says there are currently no upcoming changes to the BCaBA exam or its content outline (2027 transition guidance, p. 4).

How to get a complete application in by December 31, 2026

The rule isn't "apply by December 31." Everything has to arrive by then, and some steps can't start until others are done. The BACB's process runs in this order:

1. Pathway 2: get your coursework attestation into your BACB account. Your school's Pathway 2 Program Contact submits it once your coursework is finished; you need a BACB ID for this. You can't complete a Pathway 2 application until the attestation is there, and the BACB tells you when it arrives. If you had a VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation on record as of December 31, 2025, you can use it through December 31, 2026. (BACB university training guidance; handbook, p. 9)
2. Finish your fieldwork and get the forms signed. Each month's Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form (M-FVF) must be signed by the end of the following month. Your signed Final Fieldwork Verification Form(s) (F-FVF) go in with your application. (handbook, pp. 7, 19)
3. Submit the application in your BACB account and pay the $175. Choose the right pathway. Picking the wrong one can mean a new, paid application. (handbook, pp. 26–28)
4. Then ask your schools to send official transcripts. The handbook says not to request them until you've submitted the application, and you can't upload them yourself. (handbook, pp. 26–27)
5. Watch for the BACB's receipt emails. A school's "transcript sent" message only means it was sent. The BACB emails you separately when it has actually received the documents. (BACB application life cycle)

Dates and limits to plan around:

• December 31, 2026. This is the BACB's cutoff for receiving the complete package.
• November 16, 2026. This one is our arithmetic, not a BACB deadline. The handbook allows up to 45 days to review an application, counted from when payment and all documents arrive. Subtracting 45 calendar days from December 31 gives November 16. Use that as a planning buffer, not a promise of a finished review: missing or updated documents require more processing time. Approval by December 31 is not the published transition condition; receipt of the complete package is. For current queue times, check the BACB's application processing updates.
• 130 hours a month. That's the most you can count in one month under the 2022 rules. For a single-type fieldwork plan, total the qualifying hours you can still complete in each remaining calendar month, keeping each month at or below 130. Include any unused capacity in the current month rather than counting only full months left. Starting October 1, for example, the three remaining months have a theoretical cap of 390 hours (3 × 130). Reaching it still requires every monthly condition to be met and the final documentation to reach the BACB before the cutoff. (handbook, pp. 12–13, 19; deadline notice)

Three traps:

• The 90-day document window doesn't extend the cutoff. Normally you have 90 days after paying to get your documents in. But a transcript that arrives in January means your package wasn't complete by December 31, even if you're still inside those 90 days. (handbook, p. 27; deadline notice)
• Don't rely on January corrections to preserve the old rules. The deadline notice requires a complete package by December 31; it does not promise that a package needing a later correction keeps a 2022 review. Submit early enough to leave time for action items, or plan to meet the 2027 rules as well.
• Duplicates slow things down. The BACB asks applicants not to submit the same documents more than once. (BACB application life cycle)

What you don't need, and what's out of date online

• A BACB pre-check of your coursework. It isn't an available eligibility step. The BACB says it can't judge whether coursework meets its requirements outside a formal application review, and its accreditation rules keep it out of coursework review. Your school's Pathway 2 Program Contact does that job. (application processing updates; Pathway 2 attestation FAQs, p. 2)
• A "Verified Course Sequence." ABAI's VCS system ended, and the BACB's attestation system replaced it on January 1, 2026. An older VCS attestation works only in the limited case in step 1 above. (attestation FAQs, p. 1)
• RBT certification. It isn't one of the BCaBA requirements. (handbook, pp. 6–9)
• A degree in psychology or ABA. Pathway 2 accepts a bachelor's degree in any field. A program that isn't ABAI-accredited doesn't rule you out; it just means you use Pathway 2. (handbook, p. 8)
• A new exam in 2027. No change to the exam or its outline has been announced. (transition guidance, p. 4)
• An online exam. The BCaBA exam is given in person at Pearson VUE test centers and approved U.S. military base sites. (handbook, p. 31)

Degree: Pathway 1 or Pathway 2

Both pathways need a bachelor's degree or higher, supervised fieldwork, and a passing exam score. They differ in how you prove your behavior-analytic education.

Pathway 1: an ABAI-accredited degree

• You need a bachelor's degree or higher from a program accredited by the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI).
• You must have earned it in 2015 or later, while the program held that accreditation. The handbook's example: a 2018 degree from a program accredited from 2016 to 2022 counts.
• Your official transcript has to show the conferral date.
• This degree covers the coursework requirement, so you don't need a separate coursework attestation. (handbook, pp. 4, 7; BACB university training guidance)
• You can search accredited programs through ABAI.
• If your program is ABAI-recognized but not accredited: recognition alone is not a listed BCaBA Pathway 1 qualification in the handbook or the dedicated 2027 requirements. The transition guide's broader wording does not match those documents or the BACB's BCaBA-specific accreditation guidance. Check whether you meet Pathway 2 instead. Pathway 2: any bachelor's degree plus coursework

• You need a bachelor's degree or higher in any field, earned any year, from a qualifying institution. For a U.S. institution, that means it is listed in the Council for Higher Education Accreditation database; the handbook's glossary defines the other countries separately. (handbook, p. 67)
• A degree earned outside the BACB's jurisdiction has to go through the BACB's own degree equivalency evaluation, which the BACB pays for. You can't use a different evaluation service to dispute the result. (handbook, p. 8)
• Then you need the coursework and attestation described below.

Coming later: from January 1, 2029, a Pathway 1 degree must also be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. (BACB recent and upcoming changes)

Coursework requirements (Pathway 2)

Under the current rules, you need 225 instructional hours. From 2027, you need 270 hours, arranged in specific stand-alone courses. Under the 2027 rules, having enough hours isn't enough by itself.

Rules for your coursework either way (handbook, pp. 8–9, 23):

• It's undergraduate level or higher, taken at the qualifying institution where you were enrolled.
• You got academic credit for it.
• You passed each course with a C or better, or a "pass" in a pass/fail course.
• It was finished within 10 years of your application year. Applying in 2026 means courses from 2016 or later; applying in 2027 means 2017 or later. This is an application-year rule, not a date-to-date ten-year countdown.
• It was taken at an institution that has a Pathway 2 Program Contact.
• Hours are instructional hours. One semester credit hour counts as 15 hours, and one quarter credit hour counts as 10. A 3-credit semester course, for example, counts as 45 hours.

How the 2022 content areas map to the 2027 ones. This follows the BACB's own conversion table:

A freestanding course is one where the required content makes up most of the course. The table shows which areas replaced which. It doesn't mean any particular course you took automatically counts under the new rules. Sources: handbook, pp. 8, 24; transition guidance, p. 1.

Will your 2022 coursework work under the 2027 rules?

If you finished some or all of your courses under the 2022 rules but your package will arrive in 2027, the BACB lists five things to check (transition guidance, p. 2):

1. Did you take a stand-alone Foundations course?
2. Did you take a stand-alone Methods (research and measurement) course with 45 content hours?
3. Did you take two separate freestanding Behavior Assessment & Intervention courses?
4. Did you take a freestanding Organizational Behavior Management course with 45 hours? This area used to be called Personnel Supervision and Management and needed only 15.
5. Does your ethics coursework reach 45 content hours, with at least 15 in a freestanding course?

Any "no" means more coursework under the 2027 rules. The BACB recommends meeting with your program advisor to confirm the content hours in each course.

Getting your coursework attestation

The Pathway 2 Program Contact is a full-time faculty member with an active BCBA certification, approved by the BACB to review students' coursework for their program. Here's how it works (BACB university training guidance; attestation FAQs, pp. 1–3):

• The Program Contact reviews your transcript and course materials and, if you meet the requirements, submits an attestation to the BACB.
• If you have a BACB ID, the attestation can be submitted as soon as your coursework is finished, even while you're still completing fieldwork. Asking early gives you time to fix a gap.
• The Program Contact can include courses you took at another school, but only if you also took courses in their program and they have the syllabi and transcripts.
• They can't attest for someone who took none of their program's courses.
• The BACB accepts only complete attestations covering every content area. It won't accept a partial one.

Ask your Program Contact which requirement set, 2022 or 2027, your attestation covers.

Supervised fieldwork requirements

Reaching the hour total isn't enough. Every month has to meet its own rules, and so does your fieldwork as a whole.

The separate contact-count minimum is removed in 2027; it is not an exemption from supervision (March 2022 BACB Newsletter, p. 8; 2027 requirements, p. 2). Group supervision can include 2 to 10 trainees and can't exceed half of your supervised hours in a month. Concentrated hours can't be prorated or adjusted if a month falls short. When your hours can start

You can't count any hours until all three of these are true (handbook, p. 12):

• You've started qualifying coursework. Hours can count after you attend the first class meeting, but you have to pass that first course with a C or better (or a pass).
• You have a qualified supervisor.
• You and each supervisor have signed a supervision contract.

With several supervisors at one organization, each person can start supervising you on the date they sign the contract (Fieldwork Checklist and Tip Sheet, p. 1). A job start date isn't a fieldwork start date.

Who can supervise you

For fieldwork accrued now, your supervisor must be an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions (handbook, p. 15). A BCaBA can't supervise your fieldwork. On top of that, your supervisor must meet all of these:

• Time certified. Either certified for at least a year, or, in their first year, getting monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor. Either way, they must meet the BACB's supervision continuing-education requirement.
• Training on record. They must have finished the 8-hour supervision training and uploaded the certificate before signing your contract. You can check the date in the BACB's Certificant Registry. Our guide to reading a BACB certification record explains what the entries mean.
• No conflicting relationship. They can't be related to you, work under you, be employed by you, or be in another personal or business relationship with you. Your employer can be your supervisor, and paying someone for supervision doesn't count as employing them.
• Oversight of your clients. They need a direct relationship with, or oversight of, the clients you work with (tip sheet, p. 1).

Older hours: if some of your hours were supervised before January 1, 2026 by a licensed or registered psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology or a non-certified VCS instructor, which was allowed then, those hours can still count through December 31, 2031. They still have to meet the other fieldwork rules (handbook, p. 15).

What counts as fieldwork

Every hour has to relate to a specific client's behavior-analytic program, and your fieldwork as a whole must involve multiple clients (handbook, pp. 13–14).

• Unrestricted activities are the kind of work a BCaBA does. They must make up at least 40% of your total hours (520 of 1,300 Supervised hours, for example). Examples:
• conducting behavior-analytic assessments;
• graphing and analyzing data;
• writing and revising programs;
• training staff and caregivers on a client's program;
• researching literature for a current client.
• Restricted activities mean delivering therapy or instruction directly to a client. They can make up no more than 60%. There is no minimum restricted-hour requirement, and not every activity done directly with a client is restricted; classify the actual task with your supervisor. (handbook, p. 14)
• These don't count at all:
• conferences, workshops and university classes;
• homework, readings and quizzes;
• non-behavior-analytic trainings such as CPR or billing systems;
• general admin work;
• role-plays that aren't tied to a client.

You also can't be related to the client, be the client's primary caregiver, or be related to that caregiver. The BACB won't rule on whether a particular activity counts; your supervisor makes that call using the requirements.

If you're an RBT: some of your RBT work can count, but only if it meets every fieldwork rule while you keep meeting your RBT requirements. Most RBT work is restricted, and an RBT Supervisor isn't automatically qualified to supervise fieldwork. Expect some RBT hours not to count (BACB: 7 FAQs for RBTs).

Planning math

We did the arithmetic below; the inputs are the BACB's rules. The "at least" rows assume you finish at the listed hour total and every month sits exactly at the minimum percentage. Fieldwork totals include independent and supervised hours.

The period counts are our arithmetic: divide the required hours by the monthly cap and round up. For example, 1,300 ÷ 160 = 8.125, so the hours must span at least 9 calendar-month supervisory periods. These are not exact elapsed completion times: a first or last period can be a partial month, and every period must still meet the monthly rules. More supervised hours also means a higher one-on-one minimum. None of these figures is a recommendation to work at the cap. Sources: handbook, pp. 11–13; 2027 requirements, pp. 2, 4.

Two example months:

• A 130-hour Supervised month under the 2022 rules needs at least 6.5 supervised hours, with at least 3.25 of them one-on-one, plus 4 supervisor contacts and 1 client observation.
• A 160-hour Concentrated month under the 2027 rules needs at least 16 supervised hours, with at least 8 of them one-on-one, plus 90 cumulative minutes of client observation. The observation duration is recorded within the fieldwork total, not added as an automatic extra 1.5 hours (2027 monthly form).

The paperwork that protects your hours

Keep these records (handbook, pp. 18–21; tip sheet, p. 3):

• Before you start: a signed supervision contract with each supervisor. Every amendment must be signed by everyone involved.
• Every session and supervision contact: a log with the date, start and end times, fieldwork type, supervisor, and whether the activity was restricted or unrestricted. Supervision contacts also need the supervision type (individual or group) and a short summary of what you covered. Record the setting for client observations and the start and end times that establish their duration.
• Every month: an M-FVF, signed by you and your supervisor by the last day of the following month. A late signature means that month's hours don't count.
• When you finish with a supervisor or organization: an F-FVF, one per supervisor (or organization) per fieldwork type. Its total can't exceed the total on your signed monthly forms. If you take a break in accrual under the same contract, the handbook treats the resumed accrual as a new fieldwork experience requiring a separate final form.
• Form versions: use the forms for the requirement set under which you apply. Don't confuse a different requirement set with an older revision date: the BACB's current document-version table accepts any version of the 2022 monthly and final fieldwork forms for the current framework. For a 2027 application, use the 2027 forms.
• For at least seven years: keep all of it, including your monthly forms. The contract and supervision records must be kept for at least seven years after the final supervision meeting; completed fieldwork forms must be kept for at least seven years after obtaining certification. You don't send monthly forms with the application, but the BACB can ask for them. (handbook, pp. 18–19)

Audits: the BACB can audit your fieldwork at any time. If it does, your application is paused until the audit is done. Responses are typically due within 14 days, and missing that deadline makes the fieldwork noncompliant.

When a month falls short

Before you sign a month's form, check it against the monthly rules. For Supervised Fieldwork under the 2022 rules, the handbook says what happens when a month misses one (handbook, p. 20):

Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork hours can't be adjusted this way. Keep your full, unadjusted log anyway. Any adjusted month must still meet the other applicable requirements.

If you don't know which rules you'll apply under

The BACB's advice is to plan so your hours meet both sets of rules (transition guidance, pp. 2–4):

• Fill out both the 2022 and 2027 M-FVFs every month. At the end, complete both F-FVFs too.
• Stay at or under 130 hours a month. A 160-hour month is fine under the 2027 rules, but for a 2022 application you'd have to cut that month to 130.
• Log observations two ways. The 2022 rules count observations; the 2027 rules count minutes. Record both the number of client observations and how long each one lasted. An observation count alone cannot establish duration. Use recorded duration or start/end times; don't invent minutes that your records cannot support.
• Keep separate documentation for each set of rules, and keep all your hours within five continuous years, counted by calendar month.

Mixing Supervised and Concentrated hours

Under the 2022 rules, you can combine the two types, but not by simply adding them (handbook, p. 12):

1. Multiply your Concentrated hours by 1.3.
2. Add your Supervised hours.
3. The result must reach 1,300. For example, 500 Concentrated hours × 1.3 = 650, plus 650 Supervised hours = 1,300.

On your forms and application, record your actual hours, not the adjusted figure. You can only log one fieldwork type per month in each supervision arrangement.

For 2027 mixed-type plans: the handbook, p. 24, allows one or both fieldwork types. But the 2027 totals are 1,300 and 800, while the BACB's documentation FAQ still gives the older BCaBA multiplier of 1.3 alongside links to 2027 forms. That does not establish a clear updated combining calculation. Before relying on a mixed-type completion total, get the BACB's framework-specific instructions; don't reuse 1.3 or invent a replacement multiplier.

Before you pay: 12-point application check

Use this to find your next missing piece before you pay. It's a Castleport checklist, not a BACB form, and checking every box doesn't mean the BACB will approve you.

Go by the date the BACB will receive your complete package: payment, transcripts, any required coursework attestation and signed fieldwork forms. By December 31, 2026 means the 2022 rules. • [ ] C11. I know which schools must send official transcripts. You can't upload transcripts yourself. Right after you submit the application, ask the school that conferred your degree and every school where you took qualifying coursework to send official transcripts to the BACB. • [ ] C12. I'm ready for the application's disclosure and accommodation questions. Answer the disclosure questions truthfully. A yes to a disclosure question means you'll submit an Ethics Self-Reporting Statement, and your application is on hold while it's reviewed. If a past conviction or discipline worries you, use the BACB's Prior History Review before you pay. If you need testing accommodations, have the request form and a qualified professional's documentation ready to upload through your BACB portal account, following the current accommodations instructions. Anything applicable still unchecked? Fix that item first. It will usually take a call or email to your registrar, your Program Contact or your supervisor.

How to apply, step by step

1. Create your BACB account at portal.bacb.com.

• Use your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government ID, and a personal email address rather than a work or school one.
• Your current address must be where the BACB accepts applications.
• Create only one account. You'll get a BACB ID to put on your documents. (handbook, p. 3)

2. Pathway 2: make sure your coursework attestation is in your account.
3. Complete the BCaBA Certification Application.

• Choose your pathway.
• Submit your signed F-FVF(s) as the application instructs. The BACB accepts PDF and JPEG files.
• Answer the disclosure and accommodation questions. Request accommodations through the application and submit supporting documents in your portal account (current BACB instructions). (handbook, p. 26)

4. Pay the $175 application fee. Pay online by credit card or by mailed check, in U.S. dollars. (handbook, pp. 27–28)
5. Ask your schools to send official transcripts.

• Each school sends them directly, either electronically to applications@bacb.com or in a sealed envelope to BACB Applications, 7950 Shaffer Pkwy, Littleton, CO 80127, USA.
• If you transferred, you need a transcript from each school where you took qualifying courses. (handbook, pp. 9, 27)

6. Wait for review.

• The BACB emails you when it receives your documents.
• Review can take up to 45 days after your payment and all documents are in, and applications are handled in the order received.
• Your fieldwork may be audited during this time. (handbook, p. 27)

7. Get your determination.

• If approved, you'll get an email with scheduling instructions within 24–48 hours. You then have two years from approval to pass.
• If not approved, you'll get action items in your BACB account. You have 90 days from submitting to meet the requirements; after that, you'd need a new application and a new fee. If you believe the decision was made in error, review the Administrative Appeals Policy and, if the grounds apply, submit an appeal within 30 days of the determination. (handbook, pp. 27–28, 60)

What it costs to apply and test

Your first attempt has $300 in base fees, before applicable tax ($175 + $125). That doesn't include tuition, supervision or other costs.

The retake fee is unclear. Each retake adds a retake application fee plus another $125 appointment fee. The current handbook's fee table says $120 for the retake application, but its retake section says $140. Confirm the current BACB charge in your account or with the BACB before paying; neither amount is treated here as resolved.

Rescheduling or canceling:

• 31 or more days before your appointment: free.
• Within 48 hours: not allowed, and no refund.
• In between, you'll pay $59 or $69, but the BACB and Pearson VUE list those two tiers in opposite order. Check the amount in your Pearson VUE account before you confirm a change.

Other money points:

• BACB fees can't be refunded or transferred.
• Choosing the wrong pathway, or letting the 90-day document window run out, can mean paying the $175 again.
• If you qualify for the GI Bill, the VA can reimburse your BACB exam fees whether or not you pass. Reimbursement uses your remaining benefit entitlement and requires a claim with supporting evidence; follow the VA test-fee reimbursement instructions.

Exam requirements once you're approved

For what to study, use the official BCaBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.). It gives the exam domains and tasks, not the coursework requirements for your application.

After you pass

You'll always practice under supervision. A BCaBA can provide behavior-analytic services only under a qualified supervisor. BCaBAs may supervise RBTs and may also work in the RBT role. The BACB allows a transition when you earn a higher-level credential: your RBT certification expires after 180 days or at its existing expiration date, whichever comes first. If it comes up for renewal during those 180 days, you can recertify to keep it for the rest of that period (handbook, pp. 1, 37).

Through December 31, 2026, the handbook also permits ongoing supervision by a licensed or registered psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology who was tested in applied behavior analysis. From January 1, 2027, the supervisor must be a qualified BCBA. (handbook, p. 46; 2027 requirements, p. 5)

Staying certified under the 2027 rules (2027 BCaBA Requirements, pp. 4–5):

• Continuing education: 20 CEUs every two years, including 4 in ethics. BCaBAs who supervise also need 3 in supervision.
• Supervision: at least 5% of your behavior-analytic service hours each month, at least once a month, from a qualified BCBA, with a client observation once a quarter.
• No supervisor on record means inactive. You can't practice or use the certification, and that includes supervising RBTs, running RBT 40-hour training, doing RBT competency assessments and signing RBT application attestations.

The handbook's "What to Expect After Passing the Examination" section (p. 37) covers the steps right after you pass. A qualified supervisor must already be on record before you begin using the BCaBA certification; this is not a rule that starts only in 2027.

A state license is a separate question. BACB certification isn't a state license. Many states regulate behavior analysts, and the BACB keeps a table of state licensure boards. Check with your state's board before you start work.

Other questions

My school doesn't have a Pathway 2 Program Contact. What now?

Pathway 2 coursework has to come from an institution with a Program Contact, and a Contact can't attest for someone who took none of their program's courses. Ask your department whether it's registering a Program Contact. If the program has closed or lacks a full-time faculty contact, ask the department to use the University Faculty Contact Form linked from the BACB university guidance. For an applicant-specific question that doesn't fit, contact the BACB. (handbook, p. 8; attestation FAQs, pp. 1–2)

My BCaBA certification expired. Do I start over?

If it expired within the last five years, and you live where the BACB accepts new applications, the Qualification for Examination via Past Certification route may let you requalify without starting the first-time pathway again. You need 10 CEUs in each year since it expired, prorated to the month you apply, meeting current CEU requirements and entered in your BACB account before you submit. Apply through that route and, if approved, pass the current exam within the authorization period. Additional CEUs may be needed if payment or documents are delayed. You'd get a new certification number and must meet new-certificant requirements such as the 8-hour supervision training. (handbook, p. 10)

I have a master's degree. Should I go for the BCaBA or the BCBA?

A master's degree can meet the BCaBA degree requirement (a bachelor's or higher), but the BCaBA always works under supervision. The BCBA is the graduate-level credential for independent practice, and it has its own coursework and fieldwork rules. Compare the BCBA route in the BACB's official BCBA overview.
