What each job looks like in a shift

Medical assisting. You bring a patient back, take a history and vital signs, and enter both in the chart. You set up the room, help the provider through the exam, give an injection the provider ordered if your training and state rules permit it, collect a specimen, then move to the front for a while — insurance forms, records, tomorrow's schedule. Some employers split clinical and administrative duties between different staff.
Phlebotomy. You verify the order and the patient's identity, explain what's about to happen, and talk down someone who is genuinely afraid of needles. The larger difference in these national figures is market size. There are roughly 5.8 times as many medical assistant jobs (833,900 vs. 143,900) and about 6.1 times as many projected annual openings (109,700 vs. 18,000), with faster projected growth (13% vs. 7%). Do medical assistants draw blood?

California requires a current state phlebotomy certificate for an otherwise unlicensed person employed by a clinical laboratory to perform the duties covered by Business and Professions Code § 1246. The statute requires an approved national phlebotomy certification and sets minimum training requirements. For applicants with fewer than 1,040 hours of work experience, those minimums include:
