NPTE-PTA Exam Requirements

To take the NPTE-PTA, you have to clear two gates: the national rules set by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), and approval from the state where you want your PTA license. Here's the full checklist, with who confirms each item.

Your NPTE-PTA requirements checklist

Gate 1: FSBPT's national requirements

✓ Requirement Who confirms it / what to do
☐ You're at least 18. FSBPT
☐ Your education fits the PTA exam. You need a degree accepted for that exam level from a CAPTE-accredited program, or education a recognized credentialing agency has judged substantially equivalent. Your state must accept your route. Your program or accepted credentialing agency, and your state board
☐ Your school has validated you (CAPTE students). Your program confirms in FSBPT's system that you're on track to graduate. You can't register until it does. Your PTA program
☐ You've registered and paid in your FSBPT dashboard before the deadline. You → FSBPT
☐ You don't have another open PTA registration. Check your FSBPT dashboard
☐ You're within the attempt limits (three tries in 12 months, six lifetime at the PTA level, and no two scores of 400 or below from January 1, 2016 onward). The lifetime and low-score limits have a limited appeal process. FSBPT. See attempt limits
☐ You have no open FSBPT security investigation or unfinished sanction, and you've complied with FSBPT's security requests. FSBPT

Gate 2: Your state's requirements

✓ Requirement Who confirms it / what to do
☐ You're approved to test. Your state board (or FSBPT, in states that use the Alternate Approval Pathway) tells FSBPT you're eligible. State board or FSBPT. See who approves you
☐ You meet your state's early-testing rule, if you're testing before graduation. FSBPT allows up to 90 days early; your state may allow less or none. State board
☐ You've completed the paperwork your state requires before exam approval. Follow its sequence for the application, fee, academic records, and any other required documents or assessments. Remaining licensure paperwork may be completed at a different stage. State board. Find yours in FSBPT's licensing authority directory

Once you're approved for the exam and any accommodations review is complete, FSBPT emails your Authorization to Test (ATT), and you book your seat with Prometric. This checklist helps you organize the steps. FSBPT and your state board make the actual eligibility decision. (FSBPT registration and ATT instructions)

Next PTA exam: January 5–6, 2027. Register and pay by December 1, 2026. Your approval must reach FSBPT by December 8, 2026. Both deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Eastern. (FSBPT future test dates)

2027 NPTE-PTA dates and deadlines

The PTA exam runs on fixed dates four times a year. Miss a deadline and you wait for the next window. You test on the date shown on your ATT, not on both days of the window.

*Our calculation: your actual test date plus 90 days, which is FSBPT's maximum for testing before graduation. These dates assume the required school validation and exam approval. If your state's rule is stricter, use your state's rule instead.

Work backward from your state, not from FSBPT. The approval deadline is the last day your board can notify FSBPT. It isn't the day to submit your application. Boards need processing time, and FSBPT notes that some states set earlier application deadlines.

If you miss a deadline: If you miss registration and payment, you wait for the next window. If you're registered but not approved by the approval deadline, FSBPT closes your registration and refunds the exam fee minus a $50 processing fee. (Understanding the NPTE)

What education do you need?

The standard route is graduating from a PTA program accredited by CAPTE (the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education). If you're not sure about your program's status, check CAPTE's master list of PTA programs. It covers current and previously accredited programs.

Your background What to sort out first
CAPTE-accredited PTA student or graduate Make sure your program has validated you in FSBPT's system. Then check your state's rule on testing before graduation.
Educated outside a CAPTE program (including outside the U.S.) Ask your intended state board whether it accepts your route and which credentialing agency it requires. You can register with FSBPT at any time, but every state must approve non-CAPTE candidates. Talk to the board before you pay.
Educated as a physical therapist (PT), wanting to take the PTA exam A PT degree doesn't automatically qualify you. FSBPT's licensure reference guide shows most jurisdictions don't allow it. Get your state's answer in writing before you register.

Can you take the NPTE-PTA before graduation?

Yes, if your state allows it. FSBPT lets candidates test up to 90 days before their graduation date. CAPTE students must have their program validate them before registering. (FSBPT Exam Registration and Scheduling) Your board can also require school documentation before approval. Minnesota, for example, requires a Certification of Education sent directly by the school; its final degree-granted transcript is required before licensure.

One state's version, as an example. The Physical Therapy Board of California says schools may validate graduation up to 90 days ahead. Candidates then register for both the NPTE and the California law exam (the CAL-JAM) through FSBPT and apply to the board online. (PTBC new graduate process map) Your state's process may look different.

Is there a GPA or clinical-hours minimum?

FSBPT's published national eligibility checklist has no separate GPA or clinical-hours requirement of its own. Your program sets the requirements you need to graduate, and your state can add its own conditions. (FSBPT eligibility requirements)

For non-CAPTE candidates whose state accepts their route, the binding rule is education judged substantially equivalent, plus approval from that state. FSBPT also publishes recommended standards. States can set different ones.

  • Education: a credentials evaluation by an agency your state accepts, using the tool and version it requires for your educational route. FSBPT lists CWT 1–6 for PT education and separate PTA-Tool 1 and PTA-Tool 2 for PTA education.
  • English (TOEFL iBT, all in one sitting): Reading 22, Listening 21, Writing 22, Speaking 24. TOEFL moved to a 1–6 scale on January 21, 2026. Until FSBPT sets new cut scores, it points to ETS's mapping, which puts each section at 4.5.

Who approves you to take the exam?

It depends on your school and your state.

  • CAPTE graduate in an Alternate Approval Pathway (AAP) state: FSBPT approves you for the exam itself, as long as you meet its requirements. You can book with Prometric once you're approved and your ATT is issued. FSBPT says 31 states use AAP; check its AAP map. You still have to apply to your state for the license.
  • CAPTE graduate in a non-AAP state: Your state board approves you. Boards often want your license application, fee and academic records first.
  • Non-CAPTE candidate, in any state: Your state board approves you. Contact it before registering.

What has to happen before you can book with Prometric?

  1. Find your board and confirm your route. You and the board. Learn what documents it needs, in what order, and whether it has a law exam.
  2. Complete your FSBPT profile and get validated. You and your program. CAPTE schools create your FSBPT account; you finish the profile. Non-CAPTE candidates request an account through FSBPT's customer login page (allow three business days).
  3. Send your state paperwork when the board asks for it. You and the board. Registering for the exam doesn't file a license application for you.
  4. Register, pay, and flag any accommodations need. You and FSBPT.
  5. Get approved and receive your ATT. Board or FSBPT, then FSBPT. Any accommodations review happens first. Check that the first and last names on your ATT match your IDs exactly.
  6. Book and pay for your seat. You and Prometric. Use the scheduling links in your FSBPT dashboard. Seats are first come, first served, so book as soon as your ATT arrives.

What does "Awaiting Eligibility" mean?

It means FSBPT has your registration and is waiting for your state to approve you. Contact your state board to find out what's missing. Don't register a second time to try to speed it up; FSBPT doesn't allow two open registrations at the same exam level. (FSBPT candidate FAQ, eligibility requirements)

How much does the NPTE-PTA cost?

Budget $585 for the exam and its registration and sitting charges, before any state fees.

Charge Amount Paid to
NPTE-PTA exam fee $485 FSBPT, at registration
Processing fee (1.6%, rounded up to the next dollar) $8 FSBPT, at registration
Prometric test-center fee $92 Prometric, when you book
Exam-related subtotal $585
State license application, law exam, background check, credential review, etc. Varies Your state board and its vendors

The math: $485 × 0.016 = $7.76, which rounds up to $8. Then $485 + $8 + $92 = $585. That's for one exam attempt. This assumes a separate NPTE-only registration. If you retake, you pay again.

FSBPT has said the $485 exam fee stays in place through December 31, 2027. Sources: FSBPT exam registration & payment, FSBPT Schedule Exam, FSBPT Faculty Newsletter, Q2 2024.

Some older pages, including an older FSBPT appointment page, still list a lower Prometric fee. The current rate for the PTA exam is $92.

Do past attempts affect your eligibility?

Yes. FSBPT applies three limits:

  1. No more than three attempts in any 12-month period. If you test at three back-to-back administrations, you must skip the next one.
  2. Six lifetime attempts at the PTA level. PT and PTA attempts are counted separately.
  3. Two very low scores end your eligibility. FSBPT defines a very low score as a scaled score of 400 or below, which is at or near chance level. Two of them (counted from January 1, 2016 on) bar you from retesting at that level unless an appeal is granted.

You must wait until the next scheduled test date for which you're eligible and can meet the registration and approval deadlines. Your state may add its own retake rules.

Appeals: Only the six-attempt limit and the two-very-low-scores rule can be appealed, and only through your state board. FSBPT won't take an appeal directly from you. FSBPT decides within 60 days after receiving the appeal from your board. If the appeal is granted, you get one more attempt and must register for it within a year. An appeal isn't guaranteed. (FSBPT appeals process)

What do you need before test day?

Testing accommodations

Say you're requesting ADA accommodations when you register. Who reviews the request depends on your state:

  • FSBPT reviews requests for candidates seeking licensure in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. Your request form and all documents must reach FSBPT by the registration and payment deadline for your exam. Decisions take about 10 business days and can't be expedited.
  • Other jurisdictions: Contact your licensing board. Don't send documents to FSBPT.

Source: FSBPT testing accommodations.

ID and arrival

  • Two IDs. The primary ID must be government-issued, have your photo, have your name pre-printed, carry your signature, and be unexpired and otherwise valid. The secondary ID must be current and have your pre-printed name and signature (a signed credit card works).
  • Exact name match. Both IDs must match the first and last name on your ATT exactly. If they don't, you can't test, and you're counted as a no-show.
  • Arrive at least 30 minutes early for check-in.
  • Don't access your phone during the exam, even on breaks. FSBPT ends the exam if you do, and the attempt counts toward your lifetime limit.

What score do you need, and does passing make you a PTA?

The passing score is 600 on FSBPT's 200–800 scale. That's a scaled score, not a percentage; the number of correct answers needed can shift slightly from one exam form to another.

NPTE-PTA format Exam feature
Questions 180 multiple-choice, in 4 sections of 45
Testing time 4 hours (one overall clock)
Total appointment 4 hours 30 minutes, including the scheduled break, tutorial and survey
Scheduled break 15 minutes after section 2
Wrong-answer penalty None, so answer every question
Where Prometric test centers

Approved accommodations can change an individual appointment. FSBPT's current handbook lists 180 questions. (Understanding the NPTE)

Passing isn't a license. You can work as a PTA only after your state issues your license or other authorization. FSBPT says 29 states require a jurisprudence exam on state law. Additional checks depend on your board: California requires fingerprints, for example. Some of these exams run through FSBPT: DC and Florida law exams ($65 each before processing and Prometric charges) and state jurisprudence assessment modules such as California's CAL-JAM ($50 before processing). Your board's checklist is the final word. Sources: FSBPT jurisprudence exams, FSBPT exam registration & payment.
