Looking for a free ASWB practice test? ASWB does not offer a free full-length online practice test. Its official full-length online practice tests cost US$85 each, give you one timed attempt, and can only be bought after you've registered for the exam and received an Authorization to Test. Free ASWB practice questions do exist — from independent publishers, and inside ASWB's own free Examination Guidebook.
So yes, you can practice for free. Plenty of people do.
But there's something more important than how many free questions you can find: a free ASWB practice test written for the 170-question, four-content-area exam does not match the exam administered on or after August 3, 2026. Here's how to tell the difference — and where to go for your specific exam.

Test through August 2 and you sit 170 questions across four content areas. Test on or after August 3 and you sit 122 questions across three. The four-hour limit stays the same. Your scheduled test date — not the year, not when you started studying — decides which exam you get. ASWB also notes that appointments for August 3 and later may be limited because of high testing volume at Pearson VUE test centers.

Is there a free ASWB practice test from ASWB itself?
No. ASWB does not offer a free full-length online practice test. Its official full-length online practice tests cost US$85, use questions previously administered on ASWB licensing exams, allow one timed attempt, and are available only to candidates who have registered and received an Authorization to Test number. ASWB does publish free sample questions with full rationales inside its Examination Guidebook, which anyone can download.

The $85 buys one full-length practice-test attempt. You can review questions, answers, and rationales during the 30-day access window that begins when you launch it, but you can't reset and retake it. That's a real constraint on when you should spend the money.
ASWB recommends waiting.
Because two versions of the practice test are in circulation right now, ASWB advises candidates to wait until they have a testing appointment scheduled before buying, so the practice test matches the exam they'll actually sit. That also leaves a gap: a lot of people want to know where they stand before they register and pay a nonrefundable exam fee. That gap is what our free diagnostic is for.

Which free ASWB practice test do you actually need?
ASWB offers five separate exam categories: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. Your state or provincial social work board — not you, and not your degree alone — decides which one you're approved to take. Practice material is not automatically interchangeable: Associate and Bachelors share a content outline, while Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical have separate outlines. One category has no official online practice test at all.
The license acronym is not the exam category. People search "free LMSW practice test" or "free LCSW practice test" because that's the license title they expect to hold. But license titles vary by state and province, while ASWB's exam categories don't. The category that matters is the one your board approved and the one you registered to take with ASWB. If in doubt, contact your board — that step can prevent you from studying for the wrong exam.

ASWB confirms there is no online practice test for your exam. Not a cheaper one, not a harder one to find — none. If a site is selling you an "ASWB Advanced Generalist practice test," it isn't official, and it should say so plainly.
Does the August 3, 2026 change affect which practice test I use?
Yes, and it's the single most important thing to check. Exams taken through August 2, 2026 contain 170 total questions — 150 scored and 20 unscored — across four content areas. Exams taken on or after August 3, 2026 contain 122 total questions — 110 scored and 12 unscored — across three content areas. Both versions allow four hours.
Your scheduled test date is the deciding factor. Not the calendar year. Not when you bought your study guide.

The 2026 exam also uses a higher proportion of three-option questions and a higher proportion of questions that rely on applying professional knowledge. The three content areas are Values and Ethics, Assessment and Planning, and Intervention and Practice. The percentage weight given to each differs by exam category — the current weights for your specific exam are in the free Guidebook.
ASWB has confirmed that four things do not change on August 3: the four-hour time limit, the exam fees, how the exam is scored, and the registration and scheduling process.

How can you check any free ASWB practice test in 30 seconds?
A source built on the 2018 outlines should map its questions to four content areas; one built on the 2026 outlines should map them to three. Comparing the content areas a source lists against the blueprint your test date falls under is the fastest way to tell whether its questions were written for your exam.

If the source claims to be full-length, 122 means 2026 and 170 means 2018. A short diagnostic should still name the blueprint it maps to.

Not a copyright year in the footer — an actual “last updated” or “verified” date on the content. If a page can’t tell you when its facts were checked, it’s telling you something.

Watch for the mismatch.
A page that announces “updated for the August 2026 exam” at the top and then presents 170 questions as the on-or-after-August 3 format has not been updated. It’s added a headline, not new questions.

Original questions written independently to the published content outline are legitimate when clearly labeled as unofficial. Retired official questions come from ASWB’s own $85 test. Anything described as “real,” “recalled,” or “actual exam questions” from any other source is a problem you don’t want attached to your license application.

Where can you find free official ASWB practice questions?
ASWB publishes sample questions with full rationales inside its Examination Guidebook, a free download available to anyone. Each sample identifies the content area and applied knowledge statement it tests, and the guidebook explains the reasoning behind the correct answer and why each wrong option is weaker.

The Guidebook walks through the anatomy of an exam question — stem, options, key, distractors — and then works through official sample items sorted by cognitive level. Each one shows the correct answer, explains the reasoning, and names the exact applied knowledge statement being tested. That last part is the gold: it's the direct link between a question and the section of the content outline you'd go review.
Three cognitive levels, explained with examples.
Recall (remembering something), application (using it in a specific situation), and reasoning (weighing several plausible options in context). The Associate and Bachelors exams have a larger share of recall and a smaller share of application and reasoning than Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. If two answers keep looking defensible, use the Guidebook's reasoning examples to practice how context and qualifiers decide between them.
Structural rules many free practice tests never explain.
ASWB never uses “all of the above,” “none of the above,” or combination answers like “both A and B.” Capitalized qualifiers — BEST, FIRST, NEXT, MOST — carry real weight and change what the question is asking. And a 2019 readability study commissioned by ASWB found the exams read at roughly the level of 10th grade textbooks, outside of professional terminology. The exam is designed to test social work knowledge, not reading tricks — slow down, find the qualifier, and answer only the question on the screen.
The free program hiding in your registration email.
ASWB contracts with FifthTheory to provide a test mastery program at no cost to every registered candidate. It includes a validated self-assessment, an individualized report, a coaching guide, a guided journal, a webinar, and audio files. The invitation goes out in your Authorization to Test email — the same email that contains the information you use to begin scheduling. Your school's pass rate.
ASWB publishes pass rate reports covering 2022–2025 broken out by jurisdiction and by individual social work degree program. If you want to know how graduates of your program have actually performed, that data is public and free.

Are these real ASWB exam questions?
No third-party practice questions are official ASWB exam questions. ASWB states in its Examination Guidebook that it has no relationship with any test preparation company and that no company has special access to its examinations. Retired official ASWB questions are available to candidates through ASWB's own $85 online practice test.

Original questions written to the published blueprint.
These are written independently, mapped to the official content outline, and should be labeled clearly as unofficial. This is what we publish. Every Castleport question is written for our own bank — never scraped, never recycled — with a full rationale explaining why the right answer is right and why each distractor is weaker.
Official
Retired official questions.
These are available to candidates through ASWB's own online practice test. If a company implies it has them and it isn't ASWB, that claim doesn't hold up.
Avoid
Recalled, copied, or leaked questions.
Stay away. When you sit for an ASWB exam you agree to a confidentiality statement, and ASWB is explicit that unauthorized possession, reproduction, or disclosure of exam content is prohibited and can carry serious consequences — including having your board notified. We won't reproduce this material, link to it, or point you toward it.
ASWB also warns candidates directly in its Guidebook that some test-prep questions may "bear little resemblance to actual ASWB examination questions." We think that's fair, and it applies to us too. Our questions are original items written to the current published content outline, our diagnostic asks for your test date so it can serve the blueprint you'll actually sit, and we publish our methodology, editorial standards, and corrections policy so you can hold us to it.
What does a practice test score actually mean?
ASWB reports exam results as pass or fail, showing both the number of questions you answered correctly and the number required to pass. Because exam forms differ slightly in difficulty, ASWB makes statistical adjustments so the number of correct answers needed to pass varies among exam forms. There is no single fixed passing percentage, and Castleport has no validated way to convert a 25-question diagnostic score into a passing probability.
Do not confuse a practice-test result with the licensing-exam result. ASWB says the pass/fail result from the actual licensing exam is valid in all states and provinces for the same examination category; a Castleport diagnostic score is a study signal, not a licensing score.

Why there's no magic percentage
ASWB uses multiple versions of each exam, called forms. Different forms contain different questions, and questions vary slightly in difficulty. To keep things fair, ASWB adjusts the number of correct answers required to pass on each form, so a candidate who gets an easier version doesn't have an advantage. Practical consequence: chasing a specific percentage on a practice test is chasing a number that doesn't exist as a fixed target.
So we won't tell you that 20 out of 25 means you're ready. There's no defensible way to turn a 25-question result into a prediction about a 122- or 170-question licensing exam. Our diagnostic won't label your result "passing," "exam ready," or "likely to pass" — we can't substantiate those labels.
What your practice score is genuinely good for
The pattern. Not the percentage.
A content-area breakdown tells you where your gaps sit relative to each other — and it's the same signal ASWB gives failing candidates on their score report, which breaks performance out by content area specifically so you can build a study plan.
Then go one level deeper. When you review a missed question, name the type of miss:

Four candidates can miss the same question for four different reasons and need four different fixes. Sorting your misses this way turns a score into a study plan.
One more habit worth building: mark the questions you got right but weren't sure about. A lucky guess and a confident correct answer look identical on a score report and are nothing alike in your head.

Should you pay $85 for the official ASWB practice test?
ASWB's official online practice test is the only practice test ASWB offers, and it is a full-length timed test built from questions previously used on ASWB licensing exams. It costs $85, permits one attempt, requires prior exam registration, and includes 30 days of review access beginning when you launch it. ASWB notes its online format does not exactly match the interface used at Pearson VUE test centers.

What our free diagnostic does not simulate
Under the 2026 structure, the exam is split into two sections of 61 questions, each with its own two-hour limit. Once you submit the first section, you cannot go back to it. You get one scheduled break of up to 10 minutes between sections, and the clock stops during it. Any unscheduled break you take, the clock keeps running. Castleport's free 25-question diagnostic does not reproduce that. ASWB's $85 test gives you a full-length timed run, but ASWB says its online format still does not exactly match Pearson's test-center interface. If endurance and pacing are what worry you, that is the strongest case for the $85 test.

How much can practicing on the wrong ASWB version cost?
ASWB exam registration costs US$230 for the Associate, Bachelors, and Masters exams and US$260 for the Advanced Generalist and Clinical exams. All ASWB fees are nonrefundable. The standard retake wait is 90 days, and registering again requires another exam fee; eligible candidates may request a waiting-period waiver.

The 90-day rule, and the one exception
ASWB policy requires candidates to wait 90 days between attempts. You can request a waiver of that waiting period, but only if two things are true: your jurisdiction allows waivers, and your most recent score was within 10 correct answers of passing. You have to wait 24 hours after your exam before requesting one, and you shouldn't register for the next attempt until the waiver is granted or denied. Some boards also cap how many times you can take the exam. Check yours.
What the published pass rates actually say
ASWB publishes first-time pass-rate reports. These are the 2025 figures for all first-time test-takers across every ASWB member jurisdiction:

Those are the only pass rates we'll quote, and they're ASWB's. If you see a prep company advertising its own pass rate, ask what population it was measured on and who verified it.
What should you do after your ASWB practice test?
The most useful next step depends on the pattern in your missed questions, not your overall percentage. Review each miss by content area and error type, then work from the official content outline for your exam category and blueprint version.

Is there a free official ASWB practice test?
No. ASWB does not offer a free full-length online practice test. Its official online practice tests cost US$85 and are sold only to registered candidates. ASWB does publish free sample questions with rationales inside its Examination Guidebook, which anyone can download at no cost.
How much does the ASWB practice test cost?
US$85, verified July 27, 2026. That buys one attempt at a full-length practice test plus 30 days of review access starting when you launch it.
Can I buy the official ASWB practice test before I register for the exam?
No. You need the Authorization to Test number from your ASWB registration email. ASWB also recommends waiting until your testing appointment is scheduled, so the version you buy matches the exam you'll sit.
Can I use approved extra time on ASWB's online practice test?
Yes. Candidates approved for extra time as a nonstandard testing arrangement may take ASWB's online practice test with standard time, time and a half, or double time.
Is there an ASWB practice test for the Advanced Generalist exam?
No. ASWB does not offer an online practice test for the Advanced Generalist exam. The free Examination Guidebook contains the Advanced Generalist content outline and references and directs candidates to the Masters and Clinical sections for similar sample questions.
How many questions are on the ASWB exam?
Through August 2, 2026: 170 total, with 150 scored and 20 unscored pretest questions. On or after August 3, 2026: 122 total, with 110 scored and 12 unscored. Four hours either way.
What's a good score on an ASWB practice test?
There isn't a universal number. ASWB adjusts the number of correct answers required to pass across different exam forms, so no fixed percentage applies. Use a practice score to find your weakest content areas, not to predict an outcome.
Does a practice-test score count toward licensure?
No. A practice-test result is a preparation result. ASWB says the pass/fail result from the actual licensing exam is valid across states and provinces for the same examination category.
Do free ASWB practice tests use real exam questions?
No. ASWB states that no test preparation company has special access to its examinations. Retired official questions are available through ASWB's own $85 practice test. Legitimate third-party questions are original items written independently to the published content outline and clearly labeled as unofficial.
Are Quizlet decks and similar study sets reliable for the ASWB exam?
A Quizlet deck is not a verified authority by itself. Check who created it, when it was updated, which blueprint it follows, and whether it cites official sources. Use self-made decks for vocabulary; do not use an undated deck as the source for exam format or policy.
How many questions are in the free Castleport diagnostic?
Twenty-five, for the Masters and Clinical exams. You get an instant score with a content-area breakdown and full rationales, and you don't have to enter an email to see your result.
Can a Castleport diagnostic score tell me whether I'll pass?
No. We have no validated way to convert a 25-question result into a passing probability, so we don't publish one. The value is in the pattern across content areas, not the number.
Can I use a Masters practice test for the Clinical exam?
You shouldn't. The exam categories have separate content outlines and test different levels of practice. Use the category your board approved you for.
What if my state uses a different license title than LMSW or LCSW?
Go by the exam category your board approved and the exam category in your ASWB registration, not the license acronym. License titles vary by state and province; ASWB's five exam categories don't.
What happens if I don't pass?
The standard wait is 90 days before your next testing appointment, and you pay the registration fee again. If your jurisdiction allows waivers and your score was within 10 correct answers of passing, you can request a waiver of the waiting period.
