RBT 40-Hour Training: What It Must Include and Where to Start

RBT 40-hour training is the coursework requirement for Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification; new applications from January 1, 2026 require training that meets the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's (BACB's) 2026 requirements. This page is a guide for U.S. applicants choosing and checking a course; it isn't a course, and Castleport doesn't issue training certificates.

Before you enroll: eight checks

Every one of these is a question you can send to a provider before you spend money. Checks 1–5 apply the BACB's training rules; checks 6–7 are practical enrollment checks. The eighth isn't about the course at all: it's the separate competency-assessment requirement.

If any of these is unclear — the version, the certificate, or the assessment arrangement — settle it before you rely on the course for an application. And know that this checklist is ours, not an approval scheme: Castleport doesn't accredit, endorse or vet training providers. The official rules are in the training requirements, pp. 2–3, and initial assessment packet, pp. 1–2.

A compliance statement is not BACB endorsement. The RBT Handbook, p. 3 states plainly that the BACB does not provide 40-hour training, certificates of completion, or training program recommendations. The required course statement says the training is offered independently of the BACB. Check the course and its documentation against the requirements, not an approval claim on a sales page.

How long it actually takes

You can't do it in a weekend. The floor is 5 days and the ceiling is 180, and both the start date and the finish date count toward the total. RBT Handbook, p. 3.

Here's the rule applied to a hypothetical start of April 10, 2026:

The arithmetic is just (finish − start) + 1: earliest finish is start + 4 days, latest is start + 179. The BACB's own worked example in the handbook uses January 1, 2026, and lands on January 5 and June 29 — the same rule. Official date example.

Two things that table doesn't tell you. A date range inside the window doesn't waive the 40 hours; you still have to do the work. And the 180 days are about completing the training, not about how long the certificate stays good afterwards.

How does the free course pace the work? Autism Partnership Foundation says its platform unlocks roughly eight hours of content a day. That's APF's implementation of the rule, not a BACB daily maximum — other providers may pace the work differently. The requirement is still at least 40 hours within the permitted date range. At the other end, ask each provider two questions: when does the 180-day clock start, and what happens if I don't finish. Confirm the actual training dates as well as any separate course-access deadline. APF says learners who exceed 180 days must restart with a new APF account and a different email address. That is an APF course-account instruction, not an instruction to create another BACB portal account. APF FAQ; BACB account guidance, Tip 3.

What the 40 hours must cover

The 2026 curriculum has eight areas, each with a minimum number of hours attached. They add up to 38. The remaining two hours are unallocated, and the trainer can put them in any of the eight curriculum areas. The areas can be taught in any order.

Area E accounts for half of the minimum 40 hours. That's where you learn the procedures you'll actually run: discrete-trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, task analysis and chaining, prompting and prompt fading, discrimination training, differential reinforcement, extinction and punishment and their side effects, shaping, antecedent interventions, generalisation, self-monitoring, crisis intervention, token systems and procedural integrity. These are curriculum topics, not a treatment plan. Training curriculum, pp. 4–6.

Use this table to check that a course covers the right ground. Don't use it to plan study time, and don't read the hours as exam weightings — the exam's content is set by a different document, the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which assigns question counts, not hours. The two aren't convertible. One consequence worth knowing: your course only has to spend three hours on data collection and graphing, while the exam's Data Collection and Graphing area carries 13 of its 75 scored questions. Use your command of the material, not the training-hour allocation alone, to decide what to review. Training curriculum, p. 4; Test Content Outline, p. 1.

What the curriculum's asterisks tell you

The BACB marks a curriculum item with an asterisk when that content also appears on the exam outline. Counting the leaf-level bullets — the individual topics rather than a heading that groups several topics — 42 of 58 carry the asterisk and 16 don't. The unstarred topics cluster in three places: all of Preparing for Service Delivery (readiness, reviewing prior session notes, setting up the environment, building rapport and gaining assent), half of the introduction (the purpose of ABA service delivery, the three-term contingency, the elementary verbal operants), and most of Next Steps (how to apply, certification statuses, self-reporting, recertification). An unstarred bullet is not a guarantee that related knowledge cannot matter on the exam. The official Test Content Outline, not this count, defines examination content. None of that is filler. The training also prepares you for doing the job and running your own certification, rather than only answering exam questions. Counting items tells you what's covered, not how hard anything is or how long to study it.

Check your training certificate

Your provider issues this, and you upload it with your application. It has to be a single document. Before you file anything, confirm it shows all seven of these: Certificate requirements, p. 3.

1. Your name and your BACB ID
2. The training start and end dates
3. The amount of time you spent engaged in training — an actual figure, like 40 hours and 15 minutes
4. The Responsible Trainer's name and certification number
5. The Responsible Trainer's signature, or company branding such as a logo
6. The names and certification numbers of any Assistant Trainers, if applicable
7. This statement: "This training program is designed to meet the 2026 training eligibility requirement for RBT certification. The training is offered independent of the BACB."

Trainers are allowed to design their own certificate, so yours won't necessarily look like anyone else's. What matters is that everything above is in one document — the rule does not say it must fit on one page.

A small thing that trips people up: the BACB's documentation requirements use "The training is offered independent of the BACB", while its marketing-material requirements and its own example certificate use "This training is offered independent of the BACB". Both appear in the same official document. Don't treat a one-word difference as proof your certificate is invalid — and equally, don't imagine that editing the wording on a certificate could rescue a course that didn't actually meet the requirements. Ask the issuer to resolve a documentation concern against the requirements. Requirements, p. 3, and example certificate, p. 8.

Two practical points. Get your BACB ID before you enrol, by creating your own BACB account — the handbook is emphatic that you set it up yourself, with a personal email address, and don't let an employer or future supervisor do it for you. And if the certificate arrives with something wrong on it, the fix belongs with the issuer, not with the BACB. Autism Partnership Foundation, for instance, handles corrections through a "contact issuer" link on the certificate itself. BACB account instructions, p. 4; APF certificate corrections.

Already took a course before 2026?

Find the certificate and read the statement on it. Then confirm with the instructor that the training itself met the requirements; the sentence on the certificate cannot establish that on its own.

The handbook's own phrasing is worth holding on to: previously completed trainings "may be eligible for submission but must meet all current requirements." Older isn't automatically dead — it just has to clear today's bar. RBT Handbook, p. 3; 2026 transition FAQ, p. 2; examination-version rule, handbook p. 10.

One related case, because people ask: a missed recertification deadline is not automatically a new-applicant case. The handbook provides a 30-day reinstatement period; if that period ends without recertification, becoming an RBT again requires meeting the current eligibility requirements, reapplying, and passing the exam again. The transition guidance specifically requires new training and an assessment when a pre-2026 certificant lets that certification lapse and reapplies under the new requirements. What happens after the course

Finishing the 40 hours doesn't make you an RBT, and the course's own final quiz isn't the certification exam — that's a separate test, sat at a Pearson VUE centre, after the BACB approves your application. Here's the rest of the path. RBT Handbook, pp. 4–9.

1. Initial Competency Assessment. Completed after the training and no more than 90 days before you submit your application. Nineteen tasks, assessed with a client, through role-play, or by interview depending on the task — and three of tasks 6 to 14 have to be done with a real client. Your assessor signs the BACB's own form; other forms aren't accepted. Initial assessment packet, pp. 2 and 4–5.

The relationship rules are strict. Your responsible assessor must be a BCaBA or BCBA with the eight-hour supervision training. An Assistant Assessor must hold active RBT certification or higher and have demonstrated proficiency through direct observation. You, the responsible assessor and any assistant assessors must be employed by or have the required contractual relationship with the same organisation, and that organisation must provide services to the client involved. If an assessor is a BCaBA, or an assistant assessor is an RBT, their supervisor must also have the required employment or contractual connection to that organisation. These relationships apply to the entire assessment, not just the client demonstrations. Assessors cannot be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you; paying an assessor for assessment services is not treated as employing them. One helpful detail: the person who delivered your 40-hour training is allowed to be your assessor, if they meet those conditions. Initial assessment packet, p. 1. 2. The other eligibility requirements. You need to be at least 18 with a high school education or the equivalent when you apply, plus passing criminal background and abuse registry checks and an Attesting Certificant who confirms the requirements on the BACB's form. The handbook allows the attestation to record the abuse registry as unavailable when the specified no-registry or access conditions apply. 3. Apply and pay. The BACB's 2026 certification application processing fee is $65. Applications stay active for 90 days, and the handbook says to allow two weeks for processing. The handbook and assessment packet measure the assessment's 90-day window to application submission; BACB's application-tips page also refers to payment. Submit and pay within 90 days after the assessment rather than leaving payment outstanding. RBT Handbook, pp. 3–6; application tips, Tip 4.

4. Schedule and pass the exam. Pearson VUE charges $45 per appointment, retakes included, though the BACB doesn't currently charge a fee for the retake application itself. You get one year from approval and up to eight attempts, with seven days between them. Applicable taxes may be added. RBT Handbook, pp. 9–10.

5. Get added as a supervisee. Your certification starts inactive. Until an RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator lists you in their BACB account, you may not use the certification to practise or bill, or represent yourself as actively certified. RBT Handbook, pp. 14–15.

That last point is another reason to ask a prospective employer about training and supervision early. The handbook describes the credential as designed for settings where a BCBA or BCaBA is already delivering services, and notes that applying "is most likely to occur after the applicant has been employed by the organization." RBT Handbook, p. 1.

What it costs

The two fixed application-and-exam items come to $110 — application plus one exam appointment, before applicable tax. That's a subtotal for those two items, not the cost of becoming an RBT. Cancellation or rescheduling can add a fee; within 48 hours of the appointment you cannot cancel or reschedule and the appointment fee is forfeited. Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill can be reimbursed for BACB certification exam fees whether or not they pass. One last scope note: RBT certification comes from the BACB, a private nonprofit certification board, not from a government licensing agency. Some states regulate behaviour-analytic practice on top of it. If that might apply to you, use the BACB's state-board links to find your state's licensing authority and check with it rather than assuming certification is the whole picture. What the BACB's 2025 provider pass-rate report says

The BACB's 2025 provider report, published in May 2026, covers 51 providers and 71,555 first-time candidates. It supplies historical examination results, not a ranking of current courses.

Read it with three things front of mind.

The spread is enormous. Provider rates run from 8.1% to 100%. The report does not establish how much of that spread comes from training quality, candidate differences, or other support.

A handful of providers account for most of the reported candidates. The four largest hold 80% of the candidates in the report. The 24 smallest hold less than 1% between them.

The 2025 cohort sat the old exam. These results predate the examination blueprint that took effect on January 1, 2026. The report does not identify the version of each candidate's course or establish the performance of a provider's current 2026 training.

Adding up the published counts across all 51 providers: 54,071 of 71,555 first-time candidates passed, a candidate-weighted pass rate of 75.6%. The simple average of the 51 published provider rates is 66.9% — nearly nine points lower, because in an average a provider with 10 candidates counts the same as one with 19,418. The median provider rate is 77.5%. If you see a single "average RBT training pass rate" quoted somewhere without saying which of those it is, it isn't telling you much.

Two limits the BACB prints on the report itself, and two more worth stating:

• Only providers that were publicly available at publication and had 10 or more first-time candidates in 2025 appear. Employer-only training that was not publicly available and providers below the threshold are outside this report, so this is not a national RBT pass rate. Employees using a publicly available course can still be included.
• Provider names come from what applicants typed on their own applications, so they may not match a provider's records. Someone who finished a course may not have applied or tested in the same year.
• It isn't a controlled comparison. The report does not measure each candidate's employment arrangement, preparation time, or additional support. It cannot tell you why two providers' outcomes differ.
• A 100% rate on 12 candidates and a 93.5% rate on 923 are different kinds of fact. Look at the candidate column before the percentage column.

2025 first-time RBT exam pass rates by training provider, sorted by number of candidates. Percentages are as the BACB printed them. Passed and failed counts are also printed in the source; they were not reconstructed from rounded percentages.

Three published-rate discrepancies: The BACB prints 80.4% for Relias, 86.4% for ATCC and 54.6% for Arc Educates. Dividing each row's published passes by its published candidate count and rounding to one decimal instead gives 80.3%, 86.3% and 54.5%. The table preserves the report's printed percentages. The 75.6% candidate-weighted aggregate uses the exact published counts; the 66.9% mean and 77.5% median use the printed provider percentages. The report does not explain these differences.

So is the free course good enough? On the 2025 data, Autism Partnership Foundation's first-time pass rate was 61.2% across 13,456 candidates — below several other listed providers and below the weighted average. That's real, but this report cannot tell you why, or predict results for APF's current Training 2.0. Read it as a reason to review your coverage after the course, not as proof that you need to spend money. The BACB's preparation guidance recommends reviewing the current Test Content Outline, your 40-hour training materials, and your Competency Assessment materials.
