CDA vs RDA: Which Dental Assistant Credential Do You Need?

CDA and RDA aren't two levels of the same credential. A CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) is a national certification from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). RDA (Registered Dental Assistant) can mean a credential issued by a state regulator, but American Medical Technologists (AMT) also offers a national certification with the same name.

The short answer

The short answer: DANB CDA, State RDA and AMT RDA compared
Comparison point DANB CDA State RDA AMT RDA
What it is National certification State license, registration, certification, or other state-defined credential National certification
Who issues it Dental Assisting National Board Your state regulator American Medical Technologists
Where it counts The certification itself is national, but state recognition and permitted duties vary Governed by the state that issued it; transfer is not automatic The certification itself is national, but state recognition and permitted duties vary
Lets you legally perform duties? Not by itself. State law controls what you may do It authorizes only the status or duties that state's law assigns to it Not by itself. AMT says it doesn't replace any state licensing requirement
How you earn it Pass three exams (RHS, ICE, GC) within 5 years. GC requires an eligibility pathway plus hands-on CPR Set by the state: courses, experience, state exams, applications, or other requirements Meet one of five eligibility routes plus hands-on CPR, then pass a 210-question exam
Initial cost $450 for all three exams together (2026) Varies by state $150, including the first annual fee
Renewal For one DANB certification: every year, 12 CDE credits, current qualifying CPR/BLS/ACLS, and $75 The state's own cycle and rules $75 a year, plus 30 CCP points every 3 years

The rule that settles most cases: if your state issues an RDA or another dental-assisting credential, state law determines what that credential authorizes. A CDA or an AMT RDA alone doesn't override those rules. What the CDA does for you depends on the state. It can be a way into a state credential, a required part of it, useful for a specific duty, or unrelated to that state's pathway.

Does a CDA count toward your state's RDA?

We checked nine state systems where "registered dental assistant" language or an RDA pathway is relevant against current board rules and official pages.

Does a CDA count toward your state's RDA: state credential, CDA status and other state requirements
State State credential Does a DANB CDA count? What else the state requires
California Registered Dental Assistant license (Dental Board of California) Yes. A current DANB CDA is one of seven licensure pathways, added July 1, 2025 Board-approved courses in radiation safety (32 hours), coronal polishing (12), pit and fissure sealants (16), the Dental Practice Act (2) and infection control (8), each completed within its recency window; current BLS; fingerprints; the state Combined Written and Law and Ethics Examination; $120 application fee
New Jersey Registered dental assistant registration (N.J.A.C. 13:30-2.2) Required. Every applicant must have passed DANB's CDA exam within the last 10 years New Jersey jurisprudence orientation within 6 months of applying, plus an approved education/expanded-functions route or qualifying recent work experience and the route-specific expanded-functions requirements
New York Registered Dental Assistant license (NYSED). The state title changed from "Certified Dental Assistant" to "Registered Dental Assistant" in 2019 Yes. Applicants who meet DANB's CDA eligibility requirements meet New York's examination requirement by passing the current CDA exam Age 18+, high school diploma or equivalent, approved dental-assisting education or an accepted equivalent route, and the state's application requirements. Applicants who are not eligible for the CDA use New York's DANB-administered examination route
Texas Dental Assistant Radiology Certificate / RDA pathway (TSBDE) Yes. A current DANB certificate plus the TSBDE Jurisprudence Assessment, passed within one year of applying, is one route High school diploma or GED, fingerprints, hands-on BLS, required application steps, and any other current board requirements. A state radiology certificate is required to legally position or expose dental x-rays
Tennessee Registered Dental Assistant registration (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0460-04) Partly. Current CDA status or passage of DANB's radiology component can satisfy part of the radiology-certification route Registration and expanded-duty certifications have separate state requirements; confirm the current Tennessee Board of Dentistry rules for the duty you intend to perform
Iowa Registered dental assistant registration (Iowa DIAL) Partly. Iowa accepts DANB ICE and RHS among its approved examinations. A DANB certification that includes radiography and was issued within 5 years can satisfy the radiography education/training portion Registration requires qualifying training plus board-approved examinations in infection control/hazardous materials and jurisprudence. Dental radiography is a separate qualification with its own examination requirement
Michigan Registered dental assistant license (Michigan LARA) Not as a substitute for the Michigan pathway. The current licensing guide and exam page use Michigan-approved education and examination routes rather than DANB CDA Follow one of Michigan's approved education/experience pathways and pass the board-approved examination requirements; current BLS/ACLS requirements also apply
Washington Registered dental assistant registration (Washington DOH) No CDA requirement for the basic registration. DANB CDA is not the registration itself Apply for Washington registration and meet the state's current requirements. Higher-level duties can require separate endorsements or credentials
Kentucky No assistant license is issued to you. The employing dentist registers assistants with the Board (Kentucky Board of Dentistry) No CDA requirement for basic registration. DANB is not part of Kentucky's basic assistant-registration process Maintain CPR; the employing dentist handles registration and verifies required training for expanded duties such as radiography or coronal polishing

Checked against board rules and official pages on October 26, 2026. This isn't a complete list; states also use titles such as EFDA, LDA, permits, endorsements, or duty-specific certificates. If your state isn't here, start with DANB's state requirements lookup, then confirm the controlling rule with your state dental board or regulator.

Three patterns stand out:

  • In some states, the CDA counts toward the state pathway. California, New York and Texas each recognize DANB credentials in a current route, but additional state requirements still apply.
  • In New Jersey, the CDA exam is mandatory for RDA registration. The current rule requires applicants to have passed DANB's CDA examination within 10 years of applying.
  • For some state systems, the CDA is not part of the basic registration route. Michigan uses its own licensing pathway, Washington's basic registration does not require CDA, and Kentucky's employer-managed registration does not require it.

Which should you get first?

Before you pay for a program or an exam, answer four questions in order:

  1. Where will you work? Name the state.
  2. What will you do? Basic chairside work, x-rays, sealants, coronal polishing or other expanded duties.
  3. Who issues the credential your state or employer names? DANB, AMT or the state regulator.
  4. Then pick the credential that meets that exact requirement.

Then find the line that matches your situation:

  • You'll work in California, New York or Texas and you're eligible for the CDA. The CDA can be a useful route because each state recognizes DANB credentials in part of its current process. You still need to complete that state's remaining requirements.
  • You'll work in New Jersey. The CDA exam is part of the state's RDA registration requirements.
  • You'll work in Michigan or Washington. Follow the state credential first if your goal is legal authorization under that state's RDA system; the CDA does not replace the state pathway.
  • You aren't eligible for the CDA yet. Check all current DANB pathways before assuming why. You can take DANB's RHS and ICE exams without CDA/GC eligibility, and passed component exams can count toward CDA certification for five years. Some states also use those exams independently. DANB has announced a new CDA pathway for graduates of approved non-CODA programs; it isn't open yet, and DANB says it will be available in early 2027 (DANB, Sept. 23, 2026).
  • Your state doesn't require a particular national certification for the duties you'll perform. Compare employer preference and the eligibility route you already meet before choosing between CDA and AMT RDA.
  • You might move. A national certification can remain active when you move if you maintain it, but the new state decides whether it recognizes that credential for regulated duties. A state RDA does not automatically transfer.

The credentials called "RDA" (and one former CDA)

Job ads, schools and forums use the same letters for different things:

  1. A state RDA, issued by a state regulator. Where a state uses that title, state law defines what it means and what duties or status it covers.
  2. AMT's RDA, a national certification. AMT says plainly that it isn't a state license and doesn't replace any state licensing requirement (AMT).
  3. Kentucky's "registered dental assistant," which is an employer-managed listing with the Board. It's not a license or credential the assistant applies for.

One more trap: New York's state title was Certified Dental Assistant until a 2019 law changed it to Registered Dental Assistant. Older New York materials that say "CDA" may mean the state credential, not DANB's certification.

The fix is the same every time: ask who issued it.

A job ad just says "RDA required"? Ask the employer: "Do you mean our state's RDA credential, AMT's RDA certification, or either?" In a state that issues its own RDA, the state credential may be what the employer means, but confirm before you apply.

A school says it prepares you for "RDA"? Ask it to name the issuer and the exact exam or state application you'll be eligible for when you graduate.

Does finishing a dental assisting program make you a CDA or RDA?

No. A school's certificate of completion shows you finished that program. It isn't DANB's CDA, AMT's RDA or a state RDA. The program may make you eligible to apply for one of them. Before you enroll, confirm three things:

  • Accreditation or approval. DANB's Pathway I relies on CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene education, while some state pathways have their own approval rules. Look up a claimed CODA-accredited program in CODA's directory; a college's general institutional accreditation is a different thing.
  • The exact credential it leads to, named by issuer.
  • What's still left after graduation, such as exams, CPR, state courses, fingerprints or a state application.

DANB CDA vs AMT RDA: the two national options

If no state requirement decides it for you, here's how the two national certifications compare.

DANB CDA vs AMT RDA: the two national options compared
Comparison point DANB CDA AMT RDA
Exams Three: Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE) and General Chairside Assisting (GC). Taken together: 245 questions, 195 minutes One exam: 210 questions; AMT currently lists a 1 hour 45 minute time limit
Eligibility RHS and ICE: none. GC: a current qualifying pathway such as CODA-accredited assisting/hygiene education or RDH licensure, 3,500 approved work hours accrued over 2–4 years, or DANB's specified prior-CDA/dental-school routes. All GC pathways need qualifying hands-on CPR/BLS/ACLS One of five routes: education, competency and work-based learning, military, work experience (6,240 hours in the last 5 years) or instructor. Hands-on CPR is required
Fee $450 for all three together; $270 for a single GC, RHS or ICE exam (2026 traditional-candidate fees) $150, including the first annual fee
Renewal For one DANB certification: every year, 12 CDE credits including 2 in infection control and 1 in bloodborne pathogens, current qualifying CPR/BLS/ACLS, and $75 $75 a year; 30 CCP points every 3 years
Named in the state routes we checked California, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Tennessee and Iowa use DANB certification or component exams in at least part of the current pathway None of the nine state systems reviewed for this comparison named AMT RDA as a substitute for their state credential

That last row is the practical difference in the states reviewed here. When a state rule specifically names DANB or a DANB exam, the AMT credential does not automatically substitute for it. A lower fee or a shorter exam isn't the deciding factor; what matters is whether your state and employer recognize the credential for the job.

Does a CDA or a state RDA pay more?

No reliable national dataset directly compares pay for DANB CDA holders with holders of the many different state RDA credentials. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $48,070 a year for all dental assistants in May 2025 and doesn't break pay out by CDA-versus-RDA credential (BLS). DANB's 2020–2021 salary survey found CDA holders reported earning just over $2 more per hour than dental assistants nationally (DANB). That's the certifying body's own survey, and it doesn't show that the credential caused the difference.

Pay varies by state, employer, duties and experience. Where state law requires a credential for a particular duty, that credential may determine whether you are eligible to perform that duty; it does not guarantee higher pay.

Common questions

Is RDA higher than CDA?

No, not as a national rule. They come from different issuers and do different jobs. In some states the CDA counts toward the state RDA pathway (California, New York) or is required for it (New Jersey). In others the two are unrelated.

Can you hold both?

Yes, if you meet each issuer's requirements. You can hold a state RDA and a DANB CDA, and a person may also qualify for both DANB CDA and AMT RDA. Each credential renews separately under its own issuer's rules. Holding two national certifications doesn't by itself add any legal duties.

Can a CDA work as an RDA?

Not automatically. A CDA is not a state RDA. In California, New York and Texas it can satisfy part of a state pathway, but you still have to meet the rest of that state's requirements and apply.

Does a CDA let me take x-rays?

Only where your state recognizes it for that purpose. Texas accepts a current DANB certificate as one route to its radiology certificate, and Tennessee uses current CDA status or the DANB radiology component in a radiology-certification route. Check your own state's rule for the exact duty.

Does California's RDA exam include a practical?

The Dental Board of California's current RDA requirements list the Combined Written and Law and Ethics Examination, administered by PSI. The current applicant page does not list a practical examination.

How long does each take?

It depends on your eligibility route and state. DANB's combined CDA exam has a 60-day testing window after authorization, while qualifying through DANB's work-experience pathway requires 3,500 hours accrued over at least two and no more than four years. AMT and state RDA routes have their own education, experience, testing and processing timelines.

I'm moving states. What happens to my credentials?

Your DANB CDA or AMT RDA can remain active under the issuer's renewal rules after you move. That does not mean the new state automatically recognizes it for regulated dental-assisting duties. A state RDA also does not automatically transfer. Check the new state's rules before performing any duty that state regulates.
