ASWB Exam Levels: All Five Compared, and Which One You’ll Take

There are five ASWB exam levels: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. You don’t pick one yourself. Your state or provincial board determines your eligibility and approves you for a category under its own education, experience, and licensing rules. Associate, Bachelors, and Masters cost $230. Advanced Generalist and Clinical cost $260. And on August 3, 2026, all five change — from 170 questions to 122, and from four content areas to three.

Now the part almost nobody tells you: ASWB itself says four on one page and lists five in its current guidebook. The guidebook controls the registration-category count: five. We’ll show you why the number four keeps appearing, because that contradiction can send candidates toward the wrong assumptions and the wrong study materials before the board’s authorization settles the question.

How do the five ASWB exam levels compare?

The five categories differ by education, post-degree experience, intended practice, fee, question bank, and official practice-test access. From August 3, 2026, all five use 122 total questions, 110 scored questions, and a four-hour time limit, but your board still decides which category you may take.

How many ASWB exam levels are there — four or five?

There are five official ASWB exam categories: Associate, Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical. ASWB’s student-facing page says there are four and names Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical, omitting Associate. The current guidebook lists all five and separately describes four question banks because Associate and Bachelors share one. For registration categories, the answer is five.

We went looking for why otherwise credible pages contradict one another on something this basic. The answer is not that every source is careless. ASWB itself publishes the conflicting counts; the guidebook, student page, and question-bank structure are counting or naming different things.

So: five registration categories, four question banks, and four categories named on the student page. If you register, you register in one of five categories.

One more thing that trips people up. Associate and Bachelors share the same questions and the same content outline — but they are not the same exam. They have different passing standards. A candidate registered for Associate who buys the official Bachelors practice test gets scored against the Bachelors standard, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes a practice score misleading.

Which ASWB exam do I need?

Your state or provincial board decides. You apply through the board or the required preapproval process, the board authorizes a category, and that exam appears on your Authorization to Test — the email ASWB sends confirming you’re cleared to schedule. Your Authorization to Test is valid for one examination.

Your degree is a strong clue, not permission.

The order matters:

   Apply to your board. If you need nonstandard testing arrangements — extra time, a reader, ESL accommodations, lactation breaks — request and get approved for them before you register with ASWB. They cannot be added after an appointment is scheduled.

2. 2

   Register and pay ASWB through ASWBCentral. Your Authorization to Test arrives within two business days. It can be valid for up to a year, but your board can impose an earlier expiration date. Missing the expiration forfeits the fee.

3. 3

   Schedule with Pearson VUE. ASWB recommends booking four to six weeks ahead and has flagged that appointments on and after August 3 may be limited because of testing volume.

Where to confirm your category

Two places, in this order: the category on your board approval or the exam listed on your Authorization to Test, and your board’s own website. ASWB’s Social Work Laws and Regulations Database is the best cross-reference.

Are the ASWB exam levels a ladder you climb in order?

No. The categories are branches, not steps. Which ones apply to you depends on your degree, your supervised experience, the scope of practice you’re heading toward, and your jurisdiction. There is no universal ASWB rule requiring every candidate to pass all lower categories in order, though your jurisdiction may require a prior license or exam before a later license.

The word “levels” does real damage here, because it implies a staircase. It isn’t one. An MSW graduate does not automatically take the Bachelors exam on the way to the Masters exam. Advanced Generalist is not a prerequisite for Clinical — those two are different branches of practice, not consecutive difficulty tiers. And Associate exists only where a jurisdiction has built that pathway.

Use that to understand the landscape. Do not use it to register. The board’s approval is what controls.

What does each ASWB exam level actually involve?

All five categories test the same three content areas from August 3, 2026, but at different depth and with a different mix of thinking. The guidebook is explicit that Associate and Bachelors contain a larger proportion of recall questions and fewer application and reasoning questions than Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical.

Why can’t I pick my exam from LMSW, LCSW, or LISW?

Because license titles are written by individual jurisdictions, and boards can add requirements beyond ASWB’s category description. The ASWB category table is not the whole licensing requirement — and the same title can mean different things in different states.

We wanted one example we could verify all the way down, rather than a list of states we half-checked. Here it is.

Treat ASWB’s category table as the national exam framework, then open your board’s current licensing guide and read it. Some boards also require a separate state-specific exam that ASWB doesn’t administer at all — the guidebook says so explicitly.

What changes for every ASWB exam level on August 3, 2026?

All five ASWB exam categories move to a new blueprint on August 3, 2026. Every category drops from 170 total questions to 122, and from 150 scored to 110. All four content outlines consolidate from four content areas to three, and values and ethics becomes the highest-weighted area on every exam. The four-hour time limit, the fees, the scoring process, and registration are unchanged.

Start with what isn’t changing: four hours, $230/$260, pass/fail scoring, Pearson VUE test centers, and the registration and scheduling procedures.

The locked two-section structure is not new. Through August 2, the exam already has two 85-question sections with two hours for each. From August 3, it has two 61-question sections with the same two-hour limit per section. Under both versions, once you submit section one — or its clock runs out — you cannot go back to it. The optional scheduled break remains 10 minutes with the exam clock stopped; extra break time comes out of section two, and unscheduled breaks do not stop the clock.

ASWB also renamed its content items from “knowledge, skills, and abilities statements” to applied knowledge statements. Together with the blueprint restructure, that makes scenario application more important than studying definitions alone.

How much does each ASWB exam level cost?

ASWB charges $230 to register for the Associate, Bachelors, or Masters exam, and $260 for the Advanced Generalist or Clinical exam. ASWB registration fees are nonrefundable, a retake costs the full registration fee again, and your board’s application and licensing fees are separate and paid directly to the board.

Board fees vary too much to estimate honestly, so we won’t. Michigan’s master’s application plus three-year license fee was $99 as of its January 2026 guide — useful as a sense of scale, useless as a prediction for your state.

Five preventable ways to forfeit your exam fee without testing

ASWB may excuse a missed appointment if you file an Excused Absence Request within 14 days — and you have to wait 24 hours after the missed appointment to file. Don’t register and pay again until you have the determination.

What are the pass rates for each ASWB exam level?

In 2025, first-time pass rates were 75.7% for Clinical, 73.9% for Masters, 71.5% for Associate, 70.4% for Bachelors, and 65.0% for Advanced Generalist. ASWB notes that its pass rates are most representative for groups above 200 candidates, which means the Advanced Generalist figure — drawn from 117 exams — should be read as directional only.

Pass rates and exam counts are ASWB’s published 2025 first-time data. The share column is our own calculation from those counts — 50,340 first-time exams in total.

Masters and Clinical together are 93.5% of every first-time ASWB exam given in 2025. If you feel like the whole prep industry is built around two exams, that’s why — and it’s the honest reason we built those two first.

Is one ASWB exam level harder than the others?

There’s no defensible ranking from easiest to hardest. Each category is scored against its own passing standard for entry-level practice at that category, and each serves a different population. Pass rates describe who tested, not how hard the test was.

Clinical’s 75.7% does not mean the Clinical exam is the easiest of the five. It means the people sitting for it are a different, more experienced candidate pool than Bachelors candidates. ASWB statistically adjusts exam forms for small differences in difficulty, which is why there’s no fixed number of correct answers that passes across forms.

Across Masters and Clinical, the two highest-volume categories, about one in four first-time candidates did not pass in 2025. Bachelors was closer to three in ten, and the small Advanced Generalist sample had a 35% nonpassing rate. Not a scare — a reason to find out which content areas need work before you’re holding a score report.

Wait — does “ASWB exam levels” mean something else?

Sometimes, yes. ASWB uses the word “levels” two ways. The five exam categories are one meaning. The other is cognitive levels — recall, application, and reasoning — which describe the kind of thinking a question demands. Every category contains all three; the mix differs by category.

If someone told you to “study for the higher levels,” they may have meant this, not your exam category.

The guidebook states that Associate and Bachelors contain proportionally more recall, while Masters, Advanced Generalist, and Clinical lean harder on reasoning. Combine that with the 2026 shift toward applied knowledge statements and the direction is clear: on the graduate-level exams, memorizing definitions is the lowest-value way to study.

Can I take a different level than my board assigned?

No. Your board approves one category and notifies ASWB. You can’t register for a higher level to skip a step or a lower one because it looks easier, and if you don’t pass, you retake the same category after the waiting period. Switching levels is not a retake strategy.

The retake rules, from the guidebook

You can’t combine strong content-area results across attempts or retake only the weak sections. It’s the whole exam, every time.

One genuinely useful thing: if you don’t pass, your score report breaks your performance down by content area. That report is the single best study document you’ll ever have for your retake. Don’t file it away — build your plan from it.

Does my ASWB score transfer between states or between levels?

ASWB reports that a passing score is valid in all states and provinces for the same examination category. For licensure, the receiving jurisdiction must use that exam category, and its board still applies its own education, experience, and licensing requirements. A Masters score does not satisfy a Clinical-category exam requirement.

Which ASWB exam levels does Castleport cover?

Castleport currently publishes live diagnostics for two of the five ASWB exam categories: Masters and Clinical. It does not have a dedicated Associate, Bachelors, or Advanced Generalist diagnostic, and its full Masters and Clinical study systems are still in development.

Those two are 93.5% of all first-time ASWB exams, which is why we built them first. But it means that if your board approved you for Associate, Bachelors, or Advanced Generalist, we don’t have a study system or a diagnostic for you yet. The free ASWB Examination Guidebook contains your full content outline. Bachelors candidates can also buy ASWB’s official $85 full-scale practice test, though ASWB says its format does not exactly match the exam administered at Pearson test centers. That’s a better starting point than anything we could sell you today, and we’d rather say so than route you toward materials built for a different exam.

Your ASWB category shouldn’t be a guess. Confirm it on your board approval and in the exam listing on your Authorization to Test, match your materials to the version your test date gives you, and start from a real baseline instead of a feeling.
