AAPC Certification Renewal: CEUs, Cost, and Deadlines

AAPC certification renewal means renewing your AAPC membership every year and submitting CEUs by the due date in your CEU Tracker, normally every two years. One credential needs 36 CEUs in a standard two-year cycle; five or more need 52, with different requirements possible in a first or corporate-adjusted cycle. (AAPC renewal overview, CEU policy)

Find your CEU number and due year

Standard AAPC CEU totals and whole-CEU Curriculum A/B planning targets by credential count
AAPC credentials you hold CEUs per standard two-year cycle Whole-CEU plan: B at most Whole-CEU plan: A at least
1 36 12 24
2 40 13 27
3 44 14 30
4 48 16 32
5 or more 52 17 35

From one through five credentials, each extra credential adds 4 CEUs, not 16 or 36; the standard total stays at 52 for five or more. Totals and the two-thirds/one-third split come from AAPC's member CEU policy; we worked out the A and B numbers for 40 to 52 CEUs from that rule, rounding so Curriculum B never goes over one-third. The A/B columns are conservative whole-CEU planning targets, not an AAPC rule requiring whole-number credits. AAPC's rule is at least two-thirds Curriculum A and at most one-third Curriculum B. The Curriculum B limit is not enforced for CPPM; if you also hold other credentials, check their required mix in your Tracker.

Two exceptions to the standard numbers:

  • First cycle. Newly certified members usually get a prorated first requirement that lines up with their existing renewal month, so your first CEUs may be due well before two years are up. Education completed before you were certified doesn't count. (AAPC on prorated CEUs)
  • Corporate membership. Joining an employer's corporate membership prorates your CEUs to the company's renewal date, and that can push you above 52. (CEU policy)

Example result: one CPC credential, standard cycle

36 CEUs. At least 24 must be core content (Curriculum A). No more than 12 can be professional-development topics (Curriculum B). You can submit starting one month before the CEU due date shown in your Tracker. Membership dues remain due every year.

Your CEU Tracker in your AAPC account is the final word, especially in your first cycle or after joining a corporate membership.

Standard two-year CEU reference

36 CEUs standard two-year total for 1 credential

Standard two-year totals, not a personal requirement. Corporate adjustments may exceed 52; first-cycle and other account adjustments can differ.

Exact fractions of the standard total
Curriculum A at least 24; Curriculum B at most 12
Conservative whole-CEU planning targets
Curriculum A at least 24; Curriculum B at most 12

Eligible CEUs can be fractional. The planning targets do not reject or cap a fractional credit entry; actual approval, allocation, and requirements belong to AAPC's Tracker.

Education must be approved for the particular requirement. General AAPC approval alone does not establish specialty or targeted-credential approval.

Review each listed requirement separately. Do not add these subsets to the standard total, and do not assume any selected requirements can share credit. AAPC's approval and allocation rules, Education Hours, and your Tracker determine the requirements for your combination.

Education Hours: standard credential-combination reference: 36. AAPC's specialty policy states a minimum of 36 Education Hours for credential combinations. This is a standard-cycle reference, not an override of a prorated or otherwise adjusted Tracker requirement.

Check Education Hours as well as CEUs in your Tracker. The standard credential-combination reference is 36 Education Hours; use your Tracker's requirement for an adjusted cycle. This reference does not decide whether either account requirement is complete.

These are standard rules for the credentials you selected, not a determination of your personal requirement or completion. Use the actual totals, category requirements, Education Hours, and dates in your Tracker.

Which year your CEUs are due

AAPC's published standard schedule currently shows:

AAPC published standard CEU due year by membership renewal month
Your membership renews in… Published standard CEU due year
February, April, June, August, October, December 2026
January, March, May, July, September, November 2027

In this standard schedule, CEUs are due on your membership expiration date in that year. There's no universal December 31 deadline. First-cycle, corporate, or reinstatement arrangements can differ, so use the CEU date in your Tracker. A past-due cycle still needs attention; this table doesn't move it to a later year. (CEU policy, AAPC renewal overview)

Topic minimums inside your total

AAPC topic minimums counted inside the CEU total
If you hold… At least this many CEUs must be…
CPMA 16 on auditing
CPCO 16 on compliance
CDEO 16 on documentation
CPPM 16 on practice management
CIRCC 8 per year (16 per cycle) on interventional radiology or cardiovascular coding, from ZHealth Publishing, MedLearn Publishing, or Medical Asset Management only
Each specialty credential 8 specialty-specific

These count toward your total; they aren't added on top. The event has to be pre-approved for that particular credential. General AAPC approval isn't enough. CDEI holders also need credential-specific pre-approved education; check the requirement your Tracker shows. (CEU policy, AAPC on credential-specific approval)

How overlap works. A pre-approved specialty CEU can also count toward a core credential. A plain core CEU can't fill a specialty requirement. One CEU can't count toward two core credentials at once, or toward two specialty requirements at once. Specialty CEUs applied to CPMA, CPCO, or CDEO must be pre-approved for both. (Specialty policy)

AAPC also tracks Education Hours, the time you spend in education, separately from CEUs. The two aren't always interchangeable, so check both lines in your Tracker. Its specialty policy sets a minimum of 36 Education Hours for standard credential combinations; use your Tracker's requirement for an adjusted cycle. (AAPC on Education Hours, Specialty policy)

Two quick examples

These are made-up accounts, not real member records.

The total isn't the whole story. Your Tracker says you need 44 CEUs (CPC, CPMA, CEMC) and you've logged 46. But only 12 are pre-approved for auditing, and CPMA needs 16. You're 4 auditing CEUs short, even though your total is met. Pick auditing-approved education, then recheck every line in the Tracker.

Logged isn't submitted. Your Tracker shows 36 required and 36 entered. You're not done until you formally submit the Tracker for review, which opens one month before your due date. (AAPC on submission timing)

Your AAPC renewal checklist

  1. Check both dates. In your AAPC account, note your membership expiration date and your CEU due date and number in the CEU Tracker.
  2. Finish eligible education. Cover your total, any topic minimums, the Curriculum A/B split, and Education Hours. Save every certificate.
  3. Enter each CEU with its index number when it has one, and upload proof when asked.
  4. Submit the Tracker once it opens, one month before your due date. Entering CEUs doesn't submit them.
  5. Pay your membership under Membership in your account, or pay your renewal quote under your name → Purchases → Receipts/Invoices/Quotes. (AAPC renewal steps)
  6. Confirm your status afterward, answer any review requests, and note your next due dates.

In years when no CEU submission is due, renew your membership and confirm your status. Keep earning eligible education through the cycle; CIRCC still requires its 8 qualifying CEUs each year. (CEU policy)

Keep your proof. AAPC recommends keeping CEU certificates for at least six months after you submit. Some AAPC activities land in your Tracker automatically and may not need an upload, but keep those records too. (AAPC on submitting CEUs)

Audits are random. AAPC randomly checks 25% of CEU submissions without telling you first. For indexed AAPC-approved education, the certificate shows the AAPC index number, sponsor, program title, CEUs approved, and date. Completing more than 24 CEUs in one day is a red flag, and sharing index numbers or quiz answers can cost you the credential. (CEU policy)

Can't submit yet?

AAPC's help center points to a few usual causes: the submission window isn't open yet, a requirement is still short, an entry is missing information, or the Tracker is already under review. If none of those fits, contact AAPC Support at 800-626-2633 with your certificates ready. (AAPC on managing CEUs)

What AAPC renewal costs

AAPC renewal costs
Item Cost
Individual annual membership Public individual-renewal listing: $229, plus tax where it applies (membership page, payment-plan FAQ)
Late membership fee, when assessed $50; check your renewal quote (AAPC late-fee guidance)
CEU extension $50 (CEU policy)
Reinstating a cancelled credential A $200 reinstatement fee may apply, plus unpaid dues and any other charges on your account (reinstatement guide)
CEUs Depends on what you choose; see the low-cost options below

The renewal quote in your account is the amount that actually counts. If its base membership charge differs from the public listing and the quote doesn't explain why, ask AAPC before paying; its renewal help article gives a different figure, $222.

Payment plans. US individual members can split renewal into two or three monthly payments; CPC-A members can use four. AAPC dropped the extra plan fee on June 5, 2026. Call AAPC at 800-626-2633 to set up a plan, with the first payment due on the call. (AAPC payment plans, US individual-renewal terms)

Hardship fund. Members who are in good standing, have belonged to AAPC for at least 12 months, can show financial hardship, and have run out of other options can apply for help with membership and certification costs. Awards are reviewed and not guaranteed. A hardship application doesn't replace the CEU extension process. (AAPC hardship fund, extension policy)

If your renewal is overdue

Find your dates. Check your membership expiration date and your separate CEU due date in your AAPC account.

Example: membership and CEUs both due October 31, 2026

Example dates when membership and CEUs are both due October 31, 2026
When Date or reference What it means
One month before the CEU due date Check the Tracker for the opening date Formal CEU submission opens one month before the CEU due date.
Due date in this example Oct 31, 2026 Dues and CEUs are both due because both account dates match in this example.
90 calendar days after the original CEU due date Jan 29, 2027 Arithmetic reference for the 90-day extension policy; use the extension end date AAPC confirms. This is not a calculated revocation date.
Within the last 3 years after cancellation Check the recorded cancellation date Reinstatement without retesting may be possible.
More than 3 years after cancellation Check the recorded cancellation date You may need to retake the exam.

We count in calendar days from AAPC's published 90-day rule. Your account shows the controlling dates.

AAPC's revocation FAQ says a credential will be revoked if membership payment or arrangements are not made, or required CEUs are not submitted, within 90 days of the renewal date. Its renewal guide calls those 90 days a grace period, but treat your due date as the real deadline: fees, how your credential shows up, and your status can all change while membership is expired. (AAPC renewal steps, revocation rule, submission timing, extension policy, reinstatement guide)

What to do by overdue or cancelled renewal situation
Where you are What to do
Due soon, CEUs short Finish before the due date if you can. If you can't, check for the $50 extension in your CEU Tracker or contact AAPC Support. It runs 90 days from your original CEU due date, not the day you buy it, and you get one per cycle. (Extension policy)
Past due, under 90 days Pay your renewal quote, including any late fee assessed. If your CEUs aren't finished, check the extension option in your Tracker or ask AAPC Support for the available route, then complete the required submission. The extension doesn't extend your membership; pay that separately.
Education done, Tracker won't let you submit Check for missing entries or proof. If it's still locked after your due date, contact AAPC Support about the extension or submission route.
Credential revoked or cancelled Paying dues alone won't restore it. For cancellation within the last year, use My Account → Credential Reinstatement Request. For older cancellations or a missing request option, contact AAPC Support for the reinstatement route. AAPC reviews your case and emails the fees, any CEUs owed, and deadlines. Until it's reinstated, you can't present the credential as active. A new CEU cycle starts from your reinstatement date. (Reinstatement guide, AAPC renewal overview)
Cancelled more than 3 years ago Reinstatement may not be available and retesting may be required. Ask AAPC Support to confirm your route. (Reinstatement guide)

What counts as a CEU

The default: education from AAPC's Approved CEU Vendor List with an AAPC index number. One hour of live instruction is generally 1 CEU.

Accepted without an AAPC index number:

CEU sources AAPC accepts without an AAPC index number
Source How it counts
CMS-sponsored webinars and workshops (CMS national or MAC offices) Generally 1 CEU per hour; use AAPC’s CMS/MLN duration table for partial hours. Certificate with the CMS logo. Core CEUs only.
AHIMA national, state, or regional programs 1 CEU per hour; core CEUs only. Third-party events that are only "AHIMA-approved" need their own AAPC approval.
Events offering CME or AMA PRA Category 1 credit 1 CEU per credit hour you actually attended
Health care or health care business diploma or degree coursework completed while AAPC-certified 10 CEUs per credit hour shown on a transcript, up to 40 a year; core CEUs only

"Core only" means these can't fill a specialty or topic minimum. Keep a certificate or other proof AAPC accepts; CME documentation needs to show the credit offered and your participation. AAPC also has a college clock-hour route at 1 CEU per hour, with a stated 80-hour condition. Confirm that route with AAPC before counting a clock-hour transcript. Source: AAPC CEU policy, Approved Content tab.

Doesn't count:

  • Anything completed before you were certified
  • Leftover CEUs from your last cycle. The one overlap: CEUs earned in your renewal month can go toward either the current cycle or the next, but not both. (Carryover rule)
  • The same program twice
  • Taking an AAPC the Magazine quiz after its 12-month availability window. That is a limit on taking the quiz, not a new expiration date for CEUs already validly earned within your reporting cycle.

Curriculum A and B. Curriculum A is core work content: coding and billing, anatomy and other clinical topics, compliance, regulatory, claims, and payer topics. Curriculum B is professional self-improvement: communication, management, time and stress management, OSHA, and similar. The Curriculum B limit isn't enforced for the CPPM certification. If you hold CPPM alongside other credentials, check the mix required for those credentials in your Tracker. (CEU policy)

Low-cost ways to cover 36 CEUs

For a single core credential, what comes with membership can cover most of a cycle. This planning example assumes a full two-year period, 24 eligible magazine quiz completions, and eight eligible member webinars awarding 1 CEU each:

Example low-cost CEU plan for a 36-CEU cycle
Source CEUs in this example
AAPC the Magazine quizzes (1 CEU per issue, 12 issues a year) 24
Eight free member webinars, if each awards 1 CEU 8
Subtotal 32 of 36

The remaining gap is 4 CEUs. Take each magazine quiz while it is available and within your reporting period. AAPC lists four free member webinars a year; check each webinar's actual CEU value, approval and availability before counting it. The 32-CEU subtotal is the example's arithmetic, not an automatic credit allotment. (AAPC member CEU options)

Close the gap with free CMS-sponsored webinars or local chapter events, which AAPC lists among its free and low-cost options. Confirm each event's approval and keep your Curriculum A share at two-thirds or more. (CEU policy, membership page, AAPC free and low-cost CEUs)

If you hold CPMA, CPCO, CDEO, CPPM, CIRCC, CDEI, or a specialty credential, check whether each activity is pre-approved for that credential. Some magazine quizzes can meet targeted requirements; general approval alone cannot. CIRCC still requires qualifying education from its three listed providers. (AAPC on CEU eligibility, credential-specific approval)

Common questions

Do I need CEUs every year?
CEU reporting is normally every other year; dues are yearly. CIRCC requires 8 qualifying subject CEUs each year, and your Tracker may show an adjusted reporting cycle. (CEU policy)

Does CPC-A have to renew?
Yes. CPC-A is a CPC credential with the apprentice designation, so membership renewal and CEU requirements still apply. Use your Tracker for any first-cycle adjustment. Removing the apprentice designation is a separate process. (AAPC on apprentice status, renewal requirements)

I left my employer's corporate membership. What now?
Confirm with your employer that corporate coverage has ended, then arrange individual membership if you are no longer covered. Keep submitting CEUs through your own Tracker. Check your Tracker for the due date, since corporate proration may have changed it. (AAPC on corporate membership and missing credentials, CEU policy)

Can I stop renewing when I retire?
If you're 60 or older, retired from work in your certification area, and have held an AAPC credential for at least two years, you can apply for emeritus membership. AAPC's current form lists $87 a year plus tax, with no CEU requirement, and asks you to apply for review before paying. If you go back to work in your certification area, full dues and your CEU backlog become due. (AAPC emeritus form)

Does AAPC renewal cover an AHIMA or NHA credential?
No. Each organization has its own rules. For NHA's CBCS, see NHA's official renewal requirements.
