BCBA Exam Requirements: Eligibility Checklist for 2026 and 2027

You can't book the BCBA exam until the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) approves your certification application. The BACB approves you only after you meet one pathway's BCBA exam requirements for a qualifying degree, behavior-analytic education or experience, and supervised fieldwork. Which version of those requirements you're held to depends on when the BACB receives your complete application:

• By December 31, 2026: current rules.
• On or after January 1, 2027: new rules.

Before the BACB will let you book the exam

• You live where the BACB accepts applications. That's the United States, Canada except Ontario, or Australia. Australia closes to new applicants on January 1, 2027. (BCBA Handbook, p. 1; Recent & Upcoming Changes)
• You hold a qualifying master's degree or higher. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 7–8; 2027 BCBA Requirements, p. 2)
• Pathway 1: the degree comes from an accredited or recognized behavior analysis program.
• Pathway 2: the degree can be in any field.
• From 2027: a Pathway 2 degree can't have been earned in less than one calendar year.
• Pathway 2 only: your behavior-analytic coursework is done and attested. (BCBA Handbook, p. 9; BACB university training guidance)
• That means 315 hours of graduate coursework, with a C or better (or "pass" in a pass/fail course), completed within 10 years of your application year.
• A BACB Pathway 2 Program Contact must review and attest to your coursework. The limited legacy VCS exception lasts only through December 31, 2026.
• You can't complete a Pathway 2 application until that attestation is in your BACB account.
• Your supervised fieldwork is complete and documented. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 13–22)
• For Pathways 1–3, that means 2,000 Supervised Fieldwork hours, 1,500 Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork hours, or a qualifying mix. Pathway 4 instead requires 500 Supervised Fieldwork hours.
• All hours fall within five years.
• Every month has a signed monthly form, and each supervision experience has a signed final form.
• Your complete application is in. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 29–30; BACB announcement, Aug. 11, 2026)
• That means the portal application, your payment, official transcripts sent by your school, and every other required document.
• Received by December 31, 2026 means current rules. Received January 1, 2027 or later means 2027 rules.
• The BACB has approved your application. Only then can you schedule with Pearson VUE. Scheduling instructions arrive within 24 to 48 hours of approval. (BCBA Handbook, p. 31)

This checklist organizes the BACB's published rules. It isn't an eligibility decision. The BACB makes that call when it reviews your file.

Which requirements apply to your application?

Two things trip people up here.

Receipt is not payment. Paying before the deadline doesn't lock in the current rules if a transcript or other required document arrives later.

Receipt is not approval either. The file still has to meet every requirement when the BACB reviews it. The handbook says applicants must meet the requirements in place when they apply, "regardless of when their hours were earned." (BCBA Handbook, p. 15)

If you're starting fieldwork in fall 2026, plan for 2027. Even the faster concentrated route needs qualifying hours in at least 12 calendar months under today's 130-hour monthly cap.

What changes on January 1, 2027

The BACB defines "one calendar year" as:

• three consecutive primary semesters (for example, Fall, Spring, Summer),
• four consecutive primary quarters, or
• 12 consecutive months under another model.

The eligibility change is not a new exam. The BACB says there are no upcoming changes to the BCBA exam or its Test Content Outline. Future exam updates will be announced separately from eligibility changes. (Transition guide, p. 4)

If you could land on either side of the cutoff

The BACB's transition guide spells out how to keep both options open (pp. 2–4):

• Fill out both versions of the fieldwork forms with your supervisor, monthly and final.
• Log how many client observations you had *and how many minutes each one lasted.* One 2022-style observation may not add up to the 2027 minutes.
• Watch the concentrated supervision rate.
  • Concentrated hours supervised at 10% can meet the 2027 rate.
  • Concentrated hours supervised at only 7.5% can't count as concentrated under the current rules.
• Watch the monthly hour cap. A 160-hour month logged under 2027 rules has to be cut back to 130 hours if you end up applying under the current rules.
• Keep your fieldwork records, including the monthly forms you don't upload. The handbook requires contracts and supervision documentation for at least seven years from the final supervision meeting, and completed fieldwork forms for at least seven years after certification. Both you and your supervisor retain copies. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 21–22)

Requirement 1: A qualifying degree

Your master's doesn't have to be in psychology or education. Pathway 2 accepts a master's in any field, as long as your behavior-analytic coursework qualifies. (BCBA Handbook, p. 8)

A school's general accreditation isn't Pathway 1. Pathway 1 depends on the behavior analysis program's own APBA or ABAI status when your degree was conferred. Check that with your program and the BACB's guidance, not a school advertisement. (BACB university training guidance)

However you qualify, the BACB verifies your degree from an official transcript that shows the conferral date. (BCBA Handbook, p. 7)

Applying from outside the U.S.

The BACB currently accepts applications from residents of the U.S., Canada except Ontario, and Australia until January 1, 2027. UK residents lost that option on January 1, 2026. (BCBA Handbook, p. 1; Recent & Upcoming Changes; BACB residency rules)

For Pathways 2–4, a degree earned outside BACB jurisdiction has to go through the BACB's own degree equivalency evaluation, which the BACB oversees at its expense. The BACB doesn't accept evaluations from outside services. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 8, 10, 12)

Later changes to plan around

• January 1, 2028: Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be affiliated with an institution in a country within BACB jurisdiction. Approved contacts at universities outside the U.S. and Canada must submit eligible students' attestations before that date.
• January 1, 2029: Pathway 1 degrees must also be equivalent to a U.S. master's degree or higher.
• January 1, 2032:
  • Pathway 1 becomes the only route to the BCBA.
  • Only APBA- or ABAI-accredited program degrees will qualify.
  • ABAI Tier 2a and 2b recognition stops counting.

Requirement 2: Behavior-analytic coursework (Pathway 2)

For a Pathway 2 application, your behavior-analytic coursework must meet every one of these conditions:

• It's graduate level (master's or doctoral), taken at the qualifying institution where you were enrolled.
• You received academic credit for it.
• You earned a C or better in each course, or "pass" in a pass/fail course.
• It was completed within 10 years of the year you apply.
  • The BACB's example: applying in 2026 means only coursework from 2016 or later counts.
  • By the same rule, a 2027 application counts coursework from 2017 or later.
• Your school has a Pathway 2 Program Contact.
• It covers every required content area for the required hours.

The BACB counts one semester credit hour as 15 instructional hours and one quarter credit hour as 10. So the 315-hour total works out to 21 semester credits (our arithmetic). (BCBA Handbook, p. 9)

Any 315 hours won't do. The hours must land in the right content areas. That split changes in 2027 even though the total doesn't:

A "freestanding" course is one where the required content makes up the majority of the course. (Transition guide, p. 2)

If you took courses under the current rules but will apply in 2027, the BACB tells you to check five things:

1. Basic Principles. You need a standalone Basic Principles course.
2. Theory & Philosophy. You need a standalone Theory & Philosophy course.
3. Assessment and intervention. That content must span two freestanding courses totaling 90 hours.
4. Supervision / OBM. You need a freestanding Organizational Behavior Management/Supervision course with 45 content hours, up from 30.
5. Ethics. Ethics must be a single 45-hour course.

Who confirms your coursework now that VCS is gone

The old Verified Course Sequence (VCS) system has been replaced. Since January 1, 2026, a Pathway 2 Program Contact reviews your coursework and files an attestation with the BACB. That contact is a full-time faculty member with active BCBA certification, working in the department that houses the program.

Here's how the attestation works:

• Where it's filed. The contact uploads it in their BACB portal, and it attaches to your account automatically.
• Who can sign. The contact can attest only for a student who completed at least one course in their designated program. They still have to review and confirm all required coursework, including any transferred courses.
• When to ask. Ask your Pathway 2 Program Contact for the attestation as soon as your coursework is finished. You can't complete a Pathway 2 application without it.
• Feedback. The BACB won't discuss the attestation with you until you've submitted a paid application.

The one holdover: a VCS Coordinator Coursework Attestation that was on record with the BACB as of December 31, 2025 can be used for applications through December 31, 2026. Having taken courses in a VCS program isn't the same thing.

Requirement 3: Supervised fieldwork

Fieldwork is supervised, hands-on behavior-analytic work with clients. A big hour total isn't enough on its own. The hours also have to meet the activity, supervision, and documentation rules below.

Pathway 4 is different: it requires 500 Supervised Fieldwork hours. (BCBA Handbook, p. 13)

When your hours can start counting

Under Pathways 1 and 2, you can't start counting hours until all three of these are true:

1. You have a qualified supervisor.
2. You and that supervisor have signed a supervision contract.
3. You've started qualifying graduate behavior-analytic coursework. Hours can begin after the first class meeting, but they only count if you pass that first course with a C or better (or "pass").

Hours from before those conditions were met don't count. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 4, 15)

All your qualifying hours must fall within five continuous years, counted by calendar month rather than date to date. (BCBA Handbook, p. 16)

Who can supervise you

Your supervisor must be an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions who meets the ongoing supervision continuing-education requirement. A BCBA certified for less than a year also needs monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.

Every supervisor must also:

• Complete an 8-hour supervision training. They must upload the certificate before signing your contract.
• Avoid conflicting relationships with you. They can't be related to you, subordinate to you, employed by you, or in another personal or business relationship with you. Paying someone for supervision doesn't make them your employee.

One carryover: some hours were supervised before January 1, 2026 by a then-qualified psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology, or by a noncertified VCS instructor. Those hours can still be used through December 31, 2031. (BCBA Handbook, p. 18)

Already an RBT? Your RBT Supervisor can oversee your fieldwork only if they meet the fieldwork supervisor requirements too. Many tasks you do as an RBT, and RBT supervision itself, may not count as fieldwork. (BCBA Handbook, p. 14; BACB: 7 FAQs for RBTs Pursuing BCBA or BCaBA Certification)

What counts toward fieldwork

Every hour must connect to specific client programming. You and your supervisor must have a formal service relationship with the client, and your fieldwork must involve multiple clients over the full experience. You also can't be related to the client, be the client's primary caregiver, or be related to the client's primary caregiver. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 16–17)

The BACB splits fieldwork into two kinds of activity:

• Unrestricted activities are the work a BCBA does. Examples include:
  • observing and collecting data outside routine treatment-program implementation,
  • running behavior-analytic assessments,
  • graphing and analyzing data,
  • writing and revising programs,
  • training staff and caregivers,
  • meeting with clients about their programming,
  • researching literature for a current client.

At least 60% of your total hours must be unrestricted. That's 1,200 of 2,000 hours, or 900 of 1,500 (our arithmetic).

• Restricted activities are delivering therapy and instruction, the core of most RBT shifts. They can make up no more than 40% of your total hours. There is no minimum restricted-hours requirement. Data collection solely as part of a client's treatment program can be restricted, so classify the activity by what you were actually doing. (BCBA Handbook, p. 17)

The 60% floor applies across all your fieldwork, not month by month. So if most of your hours are spent running programs someone else wrote, you'll fall short no matter how many hours you log. Ask your supervisor early how you'll get analyst-level work.

These don't count toward fieldwork at all:

• conferences, workshops, and university classes,
• coursework, homework, and quizzes,
• podcasts,
• role-play that isn't tied to a client,
• billing, and other non-behavior-analytic paperwork,
• non-behavior-analytic assessments and trainings, such as CPR.

The BACB won't rule on whether a specific activity counts. Your supervisor applies the requirements. (BCBA Handbook, p. 17)

Mixing concentrated and standard hours

You can combine the two fieldwork types, but not hour for hour. Use the handbook's method (BCBA Handbook, p. 15):

1. Multiply your concentrated hours by 1.33.
2. Add your Supervised Fieldwork hours.
3. Check that the combined total is at least 2,000.

For example, 600 concentrated hours × 1.33 = 798. That means you still need 1,202 Supervised Fieldwork hours (our arithmetic).

The 1.33 adjustment is only for checking a mixed total. On your forms and application, record the actual hours you worked. Also, each month's hours count under only one fieldwork type for a given supervision arrangement.

The paperwork that proves your hours

• Before you start. Sign a supervision contract with each supervisor. Multiple supervisors at one organization may use one contract if it defines each person's role and all parties sign.
• Every session. Log it with the date, start and end times, fieldwork type, supervisor, and restricted or unrestricted activity. Supervision meetings and observations need their own entries. Record whether supervision was individual or group and summarize the supervision activity; observation entries also identify the setting.
• Every month. Sign a Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form with your supervisor by the last day of the following month. A late form means none of that month's hours count.
• At the end of each supervision experience. Complete a Final Fieldwork Verification Form. These final forms are what you upload with your application. Taking a break under the same contract starts a new experience.
• Afterward. You and your supervisor must keep the contract and supervision documentation for at least seven years from the final supervision meeting, and completed monthly and final fieldwork forms for at least seven years after certification. The BACB can audit your fieldwork at any time.
  • Audit documents are usually due within 14 days.
  • Late responses are treated as noncompliant.
  • Application processing pauses during an audit.
• Use the correct rule-set forms. The BACB won't accept outdated or non-BACB forms. Its current document-versions table accepts any monthly or final form version labeled for the 2022 Fieldwork Requirements; a new download date alone does not make an existing 2022 form invalid. What happens to a month that misses a requirement (current rules)

These adjustments are for Supervised Fieldwork under the current rules, not Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Work with your supervisor; every other applicable requirement still has to be met.

Concentrated hours can't be prorated or adjusted. The fieldwork log still has to show every hour you actually worked. (BCBA Handbook, p. 23)

The fastest and slowest fieldwork can go

Our arithmetic:

• The month counts are required hours ÷ monthly maximum, rounded up.
• The five-year pace is required hours ÷ 60 months.

These are limits, not forecasts. Coursework, your job, supervision schedules, and application review all add time. A pace of exactly 20 hours a month for five years adds up to just 1,200 hours. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 14, 16; 2027 BCBA Requirements, p. 2)

Pathways 3 and 4 close at the end of 2026

To use either route, you must meet every requirement, and the BACB must receive your complete application, payment, and all required documents by December 31, 2026. (Transition guide, p. 1; BACB deadline announcement)

Pathway 3: Faculty teaching and research. You'll need:

• Degree: a master's degree or higher from a qualifying institution.
• Faculty time: at least three cumulative years of full-time behavior-analysis faculty work at a qualifying institution, within a five-year period.
• Teaching: at least five sections of graduate behavior-analytic coursework, with each course primarily or exclusively behavior analytic, covering at least two of these areas in separate courses:
  • concepts and principles of behavior,
  • single-subject research methods,
  • applied behavior analysis,
  • ethics in behavior analysis.
• Research: one behavior-analytic journal article, with at least one experimental evaluation, in a high-quality peer-reviewed journal, where you were first, second, or corresponding author.
• Fieldwork: 2,000 or 1,500 hours, accrued after your faculty appointment began.
• Evidence: a department chair letter, course syllabi, a copy of the article, and your final fieldwork forms.

Pathway 4: Postdoctoral experience. You'll need:

• Degree: a doctoral degree from a qualifying institution, conferred at least 10 years ago.
• Practice: 10 years of full-time, cumulative postdoctoral experience practicing behavior analysis, under a relevant state or provincial license or a national professional credential. Teaching time doesn't count.
• Fieldwork: 500 Supervised Fieldwork hours, started after those 10 years.
• Evidence:
  • a CV,
  • signed employer attestations,
  • proof of your credential,
  • your final fieldwork forms.

• By email: to applications@bacb.com.

Finishing this list doesn't approve your application. It shows you what's missing. The BACB makes the decision.

How to apply and get authorized to test

1. Submit the certification application in your BACB portal. Choose your pathway carefully; picking the wrong one can mean a new application and a new fee. If you're unsure, ask your training program first.
2. Pay the application fee. Your status then changes to "awaiting documents."
3. Ask each school to send official transcripts. Your BACB portal shows the application as "Awaiting documents" until a needed transcript arrives.

• After payment, the BACB gives you 90 days to get all supplemental documents in. Miss that window and you start over with a new application and payment.
• The 90 days don't extend the December 31, 2026 cutoff. To be reviewed under the current rules, everything still has to arrive by December 31.

4. Wait for review. The BACB allows up to 45 days from when your payment and all documents are in. Missing or corrected documents add time, and your fieldwork may be audited. Current timelines are on the BACB's Application Processing Updates page.
5. Get the decision.

• If approved: you'll get Pearson VUE scheduling instructions by email within 24 to 48 hours. You then have two years from approval to pass.
• If not approved: you'll get action items in your portal, and 90 days from your application submission to resolve them. Otherwise you apply and pay again. If you think the decision was wrong, you have 30 days to file an appeal.

One exam authorization at a time. If you already have an active BCaBA exam authorization, you need to contact the BACB to cancel it before applying for the BCBA. (BCBA Handbook, p. 29)

While you're working toward certification, don't describe yourself publicly as a BCBA trainee or applicant. The BACB asks this so clients aren't confused about your qualifications. (BCBA Handbook, p. 5)

Disclosures, criminal history, and accommodations

Disclosure questions. The application asks about two things:

• any physical or mental health condition, or substance use disorder, that could impair your ability to practice safely and competently;
• certain investigations, disciplinary actions, or official actions related to behavior-analytic services or public safety.

Answering "yes" means completing a Self-Reporting Statement, and your application goes on hold for review. It doesn't mean automatic denial. Answer truthfully. (BCBA Handbook, p. 29)

Criminal history. A felony conviction related to public health and safety, or resulting from the delivery of behavior-analytic services, makes you ineligible to apply for any BACB certification for three years. The clock starts from the latest of:

• the end of your appeals,
• the end of parole or probation,
• your final release from confinement.

If you're unsure how your history affects you, request a Prior History Review. It's only for people who haven't yet paid for an application, so do it before you pay.

Accommodations. Submit the Examination Accommodation Request Form and your supporting documentation inside your certification application. The BACB typically reviews requests in 10 to 14 days, longer if it asks for more documentation. Allow additional time for Pearson VUE to arrange approved accommodations. If you request accommodations, the BACB emails you separate scheduling instructions, so don't book until you have them. What it costs

All amounts are in U.S. dollars.

The BACB and Pearson VUE currently list the $59 and $69 change fees in opposite order, and they describe the exactly-30-days boundary differently. Check the charge Pearson shows in your account before you change a booking.

Our arithmetic:

• Application plus a first exam appointment: $245 + $125 = $370.
• Each retake: $140 + $125 = $265.

Those totals leave out tuition, fieldwork supervision, travel, and state licensing. Applicable taxes can also be added to the Pearson VUE appointment charge. BACB application fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 31, 34)

The exam you'll be authorized to take

Four hours divided by 185 questions is about 78 seconds per question (our arithmetic), but the non-question tasks and any breaks use that same time. (BCBA Handbook, p. 37)

Scoring and results

You get your pass/fail result at the test center as soon as you finish. The BACB then confirms it by email, and it shows up in your BACB account within about a week. (BCBA Handbook, p. 31; BACB Examination Information)

How the passing score is set. A panel of certified subject-matter experts sets it using the modified Angoff method, and the BACB's board approves it. You're measured against that standard, not against the people testing with you.

Why there's no published raw passing number. Each exam form is statistically equated to a base form. So the number of correct answers needed can differ from form to form, and the BACB doesn't report a raw passing number or how many you got right. Treat any fixed "you need X%" claim as unofficial.

What your score report shows.

• If you pass: you get a pass notice only.
• If you don't pass: you get the percentage of questions you answered correctly and the total number of questions in each main content area.

The BACB cautions that each area has too few questions to judge your knowledge precisely, so study all the content for a retake, not just your weak areas. (BACB Examination Information)

Your two-year window, eight attempts, and retakes

After approval, you have two years to pass. In that window you can take the exam up to eight times, counting your first attempt, with at least 30 days between attempts. Each retake means a BACB retake application plus a new Pearson VUE appointment. Your BACB account shows your exact deadlines. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 31, 35)

Eight attempts have seven gaps between them: 7 × 30 = 210 days from the first to the eighth attempt at the minimum spacing (our arithmetic). That is not a booking forecast; authorization processing and appointment availability still matter. If you fail eight times before the two-year period ends, you must wait until that period is over before reapplying. (BCBA Handbook, p. 35; Pearson VUE scheduling)

These are group results for one year. The BACB reports first-time and retake categories separately; the table does not establish mutually exclusive people or a per-person second-attempt success rate. The figures don't predict your own chances. Our advice: prepare fully for your first sitting. (BACB Examination Information)

Booking, changes, and test-day ID

Booking. After approval, you'll get an Authorization to Test (ATT) email. Check it for errors before booking, and contact the BACB right away if anything is wrong. Only you, through your Pearson VUE account or Pearson's customer service, can book, reschedule, or cancel; the BACB can't do it for you. Pearson sends a confirmation email after booking. Read all of it, and contact Pearson if it does not arrive.

Changes. Cancellation and rescheduling fees depend on how close the appointment is, and nothing can change within 48 hours (see What it costs, including the conflicting published fee bands).

On test day:

• Arrive about 30 minutes early. Check-in includes a photo, a palm vein scan, and an electronic signature.
• Bring one form of ID that is:
  • government-issued and original (no photocopy or digital ID),
  • unexpired,
  • signed,

Your first and last name must exactly match your BACB account. A passport, driver's license, military ID, national or state ID card, or permanent resident card can qualify when it meets all the conditions. If your ID doesn't qualify, you'll be turned away and lose your fees.

For a U.S. appointment, if you have no qualifying U.S.-issued ID, Pearson's linked Global ID Policy 1 requires an international travel passport issued by your country of citizenship, with the information in Roman characters. BACB's exam-specific rules require an unexpired ID; don't rely on the generic policy's expired-ID exception without advance BACB approval.

Check your situation: seven worked cases

These are illustrative examples that apply the published rules. They aren't BACB decisions about anyone's application. The seven cases are original and unofficial, not BCBA exam questions or an eligibility test.

1. Approved in 2026, testing in 2027. Aisha lives in the U.S. and meets the current requirements. The BACB receives her complete application in October 2026 and approves it in November. She wants to test in February 2027. Does she need to redo anything?

2. Paid in November, transcript in January. Maya has these pieces in place:

• a 2019 master's in education,
• behavior-analytic courses completed in 2022–2024 at a school whose Pathway 2 Program Contact has filed her attestation,
• 2,000 Supervised Fieldwork hours with signed forms.

She submits and pays on November 20, 2026, and then asks her university to send her transcript. What decides which rules she's held to?

3. Concentrated months at 7.5% supervision. Jordan has been logging concentrated fieldwork in 2026, with 7.5% of her hours supervised each month, following the 2027 table. She now wants to apply in December 2026. Do those months count?

4. First ABA class in September 2026. Sam attended the first class of a qualifying graduate behavior-analytic course on September 2, 2026. A qualified supervisor and a signed contract were already in place. Can Sam finish fieldwork under the current rules?

5. A 45-minute observation this month. Priya doesn't know yet whether she'll apply before or after January 1, 2027. This month she has:

• 120 Supervised Fieldwork hours,
• 6 supervised hours, at least half of them individual,
• 4 supervisor contacts,
• one 45-minute observation with a client.

Assume all other monthly requirements are met, including qualifying activities and timely documentation. Does the month meet the supervision and observation requirements under both rule sets?

6. An old VCS attestation and a 2027 application. Luis has a 2016 master's in counseling. He finished a verified course sequence in 2019, and his VCS coordinator attestation has been on record with the BACB since 2020. He plans to apply in March 2027. Can he use that attestation?

7. An accredited degree from 2014. Dana earned her master's in 2014 from a qualifying institution whose program was ABAI-accredited at the time. Her behavior-analytic courses were part of that degree, taken from 2012 to 2014, and she has no later qualifying coursework. Do that degree and those courses meet Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 requirements for a 2026 application?

After you pass

Your certification. Your pass/fail result appears on screen when you finish, and the BACB confirms it by email.

Only one BACB certification at a time. If you already hold RBT or BCaBA certification, that lower certification expires 180 days after you earn the BCBA, or sooner if its existing expiration date arrives first. The handbook allows a recertification application to maintain the lower certification through the remainder of that 180-day transition when needed. The BCBA-D is a designation for BCBAs with doctoral training, not a separate exam or certification. (BCBA Handbook, p. 1)

State licensing is separate. BACB certification is not a state license. The BACB's licensure table lists 40 states plus the District of Columbia with laws that license or otherwise regulate behavior analysts. Some states with newly enacted laws may not have an application system running yet. Find your state's board in the BACB's U.S. licensure table before you plan to practice.

Keeping your certification. Maintenance means continuing education, ethics and self-reporting requirements, and recertification every two years. The details are in the BCBA Handbook.

Common questions

Do I need to be an RBT or BCaBA before the BCBA?

No. Neither certification appears in any BCBA eligibility pathway. Starting as an RBT is common: the BACB noted in a 2023 post that nearly half of recently certified BCBAs and BCaBAs were RBTs when they applied. It's a common path, not a required one. Can I take the BCBA exam online?

No. It's delivered in person at Pearson VUE test centers and qualifying U.S. military bases. (BACB Examination Information)

My BCBA certification expired. Do I have to start over?

Not necessarily. You may be able to requalify by passing the exam again if both of these are true:

• your certification expired within the last five years;
• you've earned 16 continuing education units (CEUs) for each year since it expired, prorated to the month you apply; the CEUs meet current BACB requirements and are entered in your BACB portal before you apply.

If approved, you have to pass the current exam within a two-year authorization. You'd get a new certification number and must meet new-certificant requirements. This option is open only to residents of countries where the BACB accepts new applications. (BCBA Handbook, p. 13)

Will the BACB tell me whether a specific activity counts as fieldwork?

No. It points you to the published requirements and expects your supervisor to apply them. That's one more reason to choose an organized supervisor who knows the rules well. (BCBA Handbook, pp. 5, 17)

How often do these requirements change?
